This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The Hebrew places “seed” beside a verb that can mean “ruin”: what could become a brother’s future is described as destroyed on the ground.

Onan knows the seed would count toward his brother’s line, then deliberately prevents that future from being given. The verse makes its living point plain now: physical intimacy does not by itself mean that what it could give is being offered. It names both the bodily seed and the denied future with the same word.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Physical closeness automatically means giving; here, intimacy is shaped by a knowing refusal.

זֶרַע

zeraʿ

GROWS FROM

זרע

z-r-ʿ

To sow; seed as what is sown.

Hebrew zeraʿ can mean both seed and offspring or descendants. The repeated word joins the bodily substance Onan spills to the future of his brother’s line that he refuses to give.

ALSO GROWS

sow: To sow or plant seed.

זָרַע

The act of sowing carries what is present into a future harvest.

offspring: Seed, offspring, or descendants.

זֶרַע

The same word makes seed a name for the generations that follow.

וְשִׁחֵת

ve-shichet

GROWS FROM

שחת

sh-ḥ-t

To ruin, spoil, or destroy.

The KJV’s “spilled” describes what happens to the seed; the Hebrew verb also carries the shade of ruin or destruction. That shade sits beside the verse’s explicit account of Onan’s deliberate refusal.

ALSO GROWS

corrupt: To ruin or corrupt.

שִׁחֵת

The same verb describes a way being corrupted, showing its broader sense of damage.

destroyer: A destroyer or one who brings destruction.

מַשְׁחִית

This related form carries the root’s destructive force into a noun.

Seed names a present sowing that carries a future beyond itself.

And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
Genesis 1:11 · KJVSeed holds the capacity for what comes next within what is present now.
And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him.
Genesis 12:7 · KJVThe same Hebrew word reaches beyond a single body to name descendants and their future.
Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.
Galatians 3:16 · KJVThe Greek word for seed likewise carries a promise forward through the figure of a descendant.
And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him.
Genesis 12:7 · KJV

The same Hebrew ⁨זֶרַע⁩ names the seed in this verse and Abram’s descendants in the promise. Here, Onan knows that seed would extend his brother’s line, which makes his refusal a refusal of that future.
