This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

Hebrew uses one root for “was born” and “begat,” showing every life here as both received and passed onward.

This line shows each person as both a life received and a link through which life continues. You, too, are a particular life within a chain of lives, carrying something forward in your own way.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that a life is self-originating or sealed off from others: each named person is received into the line and becomes its next link.

וַיִּוָּלֵד

wayyiwwālēḏ

GROWS FROM

ילד

to bear, bring forth, or beget

“was born / begat” in this verse is wayyiwwālēḏ. The verse uses this root first for Enoch’s child being born, then repeatedly for one generation begetting the next. English changes the verb, but Hebrew holds receiving birth and bringing forth under one seed: each person is both arrival and passage.

ALSO GROWS

yeled: child

יֶלֶד

The child is the life brought forth by the same root that names the act of begetting.

moledet: birth, kindred, or lineage

מוֹלֶדֶת

The root extends beyond an individual birth to the family line that gathers lives into relation.

חֲנוֹךְ

Ḥănōḵ

GROWS FROM

חנך

to initiate, train, or dedicate

Enoch’s name is commonly linked to the sense of being dedicated or initiated. Beside the repeated birth-root, the verse names a particular person while showing life continuing through a line.

ALSO GROWS

ḥānaḵ: to dedicate or inaugurate

חָנַךְ

The verb gives the name its sense of being set apart for a beginning.

ḥănukkāh: dedication or inauguration

חֲנֻכָּה

This related noun preserves the same idea of setting something apart at its beginning.

Life is received and carried forward through particular, named relationships.

And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth:
Genesis 5:3 · KJVThe next genealogy links begetting with likeness, showing what can travel through a line as well as a name.
And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David.
Ruth 4:17 · KJVObed’s birth becomes a living connection across generations, from Naomi to Jesse and David.
Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.
Luke 3:38 · KJVThe lineage reaches back through named lives to its source, extending the pattern beyond one family.
And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth:
Genesis 5:3 · KJV

“Begat” uses the same ⁨ילד⁩ root that holds together “was born” and “begat” in this verse. Genesis 5:3 makes explicit what the bare chain leaves open: a birth can carry likeness forward along with life.
