What Does Genesis 41:4 Mean in the King James?
And the ill favoured and leanfleshed kine did eat up the seven well favoured and fat kine. So Pharaoh awoke.

THE KEY
The dream makes weakness the devourer: what looks least able to threaten abundance consumes it whole.
THE MEANING
The verse holds a troubling reversal in view: the lean cows consume the fat ones, and their outward weakness does not stop them. What looks abundant is vulnerable to being swallowed by what looks depleted.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that visible abundance guarantees protection from loss.
THE ROOT
וַתֹּאכַלְנָה
va-tokhalnah
GROWS FROM
אכל
to eat, consume
“ate up” in this verse is va-tokhalnah. The same root names both the act of eating and, in its branches, what is eaten. Here the lean cows do not merely survive beside abundance; they take it into themselves, making visible how abundance can be swallowed without becoming security.
ALSO GROWS
ʾākal: to eat, consume
אָכַל
The root verb names the cows’ act directly.
maʾakhal: food, that which is eaten
מַאֲכָל
This branch joins the act of consuming to what is consumed, the unsettling relation at the center of the dream.
מַרְאֶה
marʾeh
GROWS FROM
ראה
to see, look, perceive
Both groups are marked by appearance: one looks bad, the other good. The dream overturns that visual ranking when the lean-looking cows swallow the well-favoured ones, showing that appearance does not disclose what can consume what.
ALSO GROWS
raʾah: to see, look
רָאָה
This verb names the seeing on which the cows’ contrasting appearances depend.
roʾeh: one who sees; a seer
רֹאֶה
This branch keeps the focus on the viewer: what Pharaoh sees in the dream is vivid, but appearance alone does not explain its force.
THE PATTERN
A force of scarcity can consume abundance until what seemed secure is gone.
And there shall arise after them seven years of famine; and all the plenty shall be forgotten in the land of Egypt; and the famine shall consume the land; That which the palmerworm hath left hath the locust eaten; and that which the locust hath left hath the cankerworm eaten; and that which the cankerworm hath left hath the caterpiller eaten. For they covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened; and they did eat every herb of the land, and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left: and there remained not any green thing in the trees, or in the herbs of the field, through all the land of Egypt.THE THREAD
And there shall arise after them seven years of famine; and all the plenty shall be forgotten in the land of Egypt; and the famine shall consume the land; This verse names the dream’s force: famine follows plenty and consumes the land. The cows embody in one image how abundance can disappear beneath a season of lack.
