What Does Genesis 41:7 Mean in the King James?
And the seven thin ears devoured the seven rank and full ears. And Pharaoh awoke, and, behold, it was a dream.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The thin ears swallow the full ones whole, making scarcity the force that consumes visible abundance.
THE MEANING
The scene speaks now as an image of visible fullness being consumed by what appears meager. Abundance is real, yet it offers no guarantee against being swallowed. Pharaoh wakes, but the dream has already held fullness and its erasure together.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that what looks abundant is therefore secure: even the full ears are swallowed.
THE ROOT
וַתִּבְלַעְנָה
vattivlaʿnah
GROWS FROM
בלע
b-l-ʿ
To swallow, engulf, or consume.
“devoured” in this verse is vattivlaʿnah. The verb shows the full ears being taken inside and disappearing, not merely defeated from outside. The same root later describes death itself being swallowed, so this image can hold both abundance consumed by scarcity and death consumed in victory.
ALSO GROWS
balaʿ: To swallow or consume.
בָּלַע
This is the action in the dream: the thin ears take the full ears into themselves.
billaʿ: Swallow up; the verb used in Isaiah 25:8 for death.
בִּלַּע
The same root makes death the thing swallowed there, turning the image toward a reversal of power.
מְלֵאוֹת
meleʾot
GROWS FROM
מלא
m-l-ʾ
To be full or to fill.
“full” in this verse is meleʾot. The root describes a real state of fullness, but carries no promise that the state will last. Here, fullness is present and still gets consumed.
ALSO GROWS
maleʾ: To be full or filled.
מָלֵא
It shares the seed of the ears’ fullness, showing that their abundance is genuine even as it proves vulnerable.
meloʾ: Fullness or a full measure.
מְלֹא
The dream places a full measure beside thinness, then shows that fullness alone does not govern what happens next.
דַּקּוֹת
daqqot
GROWS FROM
דקק
d-q-q
To be thin or fine; to be reduced to smallness.
“thin” in this verse is daqqot. This root family carries the sense of thinness and fine grinding. The dream makes the attenuated ears the active force: what looks reduced consumes what looks abundant.
ALSO GROWS
daq: Thin or finely ground.
דַּק
The shared seed gives the ears a quality of reduction, not just a smaller number.
hadēq: To grind or crush finely.
הָדֵק
This related form sharpens the image of smallness; yet the thin ears are the ones that swallow the full ones.
THE PATTERN
Swallowing imagery marks a complete transfer of power: the swallowed force no longer rules the scene.
Thou stretchedst out thy right hand, the earth swallowed them.He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it.So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.THE THREAD
He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it.The Hebrew root בלע (b-l-ʿ, “swallow”) appears in both verses. Genesis shows thinness swallowing fullness; Isaiah turns the image so death itself is swallowed, revealing how the same root can carry both collapse and victory.
