THE KEY
Jacob keeps back Benjamin, whose name means “son of the right hand,” so protection appears here as a refusal to release the one held nearest.
THE MEANING
When fear gathers around someone you love, keeping them close can feel like protection while also closing the road outward. Jacob’s refusal to send Benjamin holds both truths in one gesture: care guards him from a feared danger and confines him from the journey.
THE ROOT
שָׁלַח
shalach
GROWS FROM
שׁלח
To send forth, send away, or release.
“sent” in this verse is shalach. The Hebrew shalach (שָׁלַח, send forth or release) makes the restraint tangible: Jacob’s care appears as a withheld sending. Benjamin (בִּנְיָמִין, Binyamin) means “son of the right hand,” placing the one held nearest at the center of Jacob’s fear.
ALSO GROWS
shilluach: Sending away, dismissal, or release.
שִׁלּוּחַ
This noun keeps the releasing sense visible in the word family: Benjamin is the one Jacob does not send out.
Shiloach: “Sent”; the name associated with the waters or pool of Siloam.
שִׁלֹחַ
John 9:7 explains Siloam as “Sent,” carrying the same word family into the image of waters through which sight is restored.
THE PATTERN
Fear of harm governs how the vulnerable move: it can hold a beloved person back or send them toward refuge.
But Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; for he said, Lest peradventure mischief befall him.And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin. If I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved. And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.THE THREAD
And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin. If I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved. The same Hebrew root for “send” appears when Jacob asks the ruler to send Benjamin. The journey he once withheld becomes the very thing he now asks another person to permit, while the fear of loss remains present.
