What Does Genesis 42:6 Mean in the King James?
And Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was that sold to all the people of the land: and Joseph’s brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth.

THE KEY
The brothers’ bow is the same Hebrew verb as the bowing in Joseph’s dream: the dream becomes visible in the man who now controls their grain.
THE MEANING
The verse shows how dependence can reverse when access to what sustains life rests in the hands of someone once dismissed. The brothers’ bodies acknowledge Joseph’s authority before they recognize who he is. A reversal can already be unfolding before the people inside it understand what has changed.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The person once cast beneath the family can never become the one on whom they depend.
THE ROOT
וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּ
wayyishtachavu
GROWS FROM
שחה
shachah
to bow down, to prostrate oneself
“bowed down” in this verse is wayyishtachavu. This verb holds the whole body’s movement toward the ground, not merely an inward concession. The same root describes the sheaves bowing in Joseph’s dream, so the posture here is that dream made visible in the brothers’ encounter with the grain Joseph controls.
ALSO GROWS
wattishtaḥăweynā: they bowed down; the sheaves’ obeisance in Genesis 37:7
וַתִּשְׁתַּחֲוֶיןָ
The same root first gives the bowing shape within the dream, then returns in the brothers’ bodily posture.
weyištaḥăwû: and they shall bow down; the kings’ posture in Psalm 72:11
וְיִשְׁתַּחֲווּ
The root also names the body’s bowing before a king, extending this posture beyond Joseph’s family story.
THE PATTERN
Bodily bowing makes authority visible.
For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.Yea, all kings shall fall down before him: all nations shall serve him. That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;THE THREAD
For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf. The same root appears in the dream’s “made obeisance”: what is first seen in sheaves is now carried out by the brothers themselves. The grain Joseph distributes makes the dream’s posture concrete.
