What Does Genesis 44:5 Mean in the King James?
Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The Hebrew repeats the root for “divine,” making the steward’s certainty part of the accusation.
THE MEANING
A vessel can be made to carry a claim of hidden knowledge, and that claim can turn into an accusation of wrongdoing. The words give the charge certainty; they do not establish that the cup truly reveals anything.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A confident claim of hidden knowledge is not proof of guilt; certainty can give an accusation force without making it true.
THE ROOT
יְנַחֵשׁ
yenaḥēš
GROWS FROM
נחש
n-ḥ-sh
To practice divination or read omens.
“divineth” in this verse is yenaḥēš. The Hebrew doubles the verb in an emphatic construction: “he certainly divines.” The repeated root heightens the steward’s certainty, while the verse reports the cup’s supposed power without proving it.
ALSO GROWS
neḥāšîm: Divinations or omens.
נְחָשִׁים
This related form keeps the act of reading signs within the same root family.
nāḥāš: Serpent.
נָחָשׁ
It shares the same consonants as the divination word, creating a textual echo; the shared spelling alone does not establish that the words derive from one another.
THE PATTERN
When what is hidden seems inaccessible, people turn to signs or claimed unseen knowledge to gain certainty or authority.
There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,For the king of Babylon stood at the parting of the way, at the head of the two ways, to use divination: he made his arrows bright, he consulted with images, he looked in the liver. And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:THE THREAD
And Joseph said unto them, What deed is this that ye have done? wot ye not that such a man as I can certainly divine? The same emphatic Hebrew verb appears again in Joseph’s question. Its repetition makes the cup’s alleged divining the pressure point of the accusation.
