What Does Genesis 45:1 Mean in the King James?
Then Joseph could not refrain himself before all them that stood by him; and he cried, Cause every man to go out from me. And there stood no man with him, while Joseph made himself known unto his brethren.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
Joseph cannot restrain himself, yet his first act is to clear the room so his brothers can meet the truth of his identity alone.
THE MEANING
The verse meets you where what has been held inside reaches its limit: the room narrows, and only those who need to know remain. Truth becomes an encounter here, not a performance, the person is finally seen face to face.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse unsettles the belief that self-command means keeping every feeling contained: Joseph’s restraint reaches its limit, and truth appears through disclosure.
THE ROOT
לְהִתְאַפֵּק
lehitʾappēq
GROWS FROM
אפק
ʾ-p-q
to hold in, contain, or restrain
“refrain himself” in this verse is lehitʾappēq. A related noun, אָפִיק (ʾāfîq), means a channel or streambed: a course that holds a force within bounds. That image reaches its limit here; this same root marked Joseph’s restraint earlier, but now he can no longer contain the disclosure.
ALSO GROWS
ʾāfîq: A channel or streambed
אָפִיק
The image of a channel holding a force in bounds gives restraint a physical shape, echoing what Joseph can no longer hold in.
wayyitʾappaq: He restrained himself
וַיִּתְאַפַּק
The same root describes Joseph containing his response earlier in the story, making this verse the turn from restraint to disclosure.
בְּהִתְוַדַּע
behitwaddaʿ
GROWS FROM
ידע
y-d-ʿ
to know, recognize, or perceive
“made himself known” in this verse is behitwaddaʿ. The form turns the knowing back onto Joseph: he makes himself known. Knowing becomes disclosure of self, more intimate than simply supplying a fact about who he is.
ALSO GROWS
yādaʿ: To know or perceive
יָדַע
The root’s ordinary knowing becomes personal here: his brothers are brought into recognition of the person before them.
hôdîaʿ: To cause someone to know or make something known
הוֹדִיעַ
This causative branch brings the act of disclosure into view: Joseph makes his identity known to his brothers.
יוֹסֵף
Yosef
GROWS FROM
יסף
y-s-f
to add or increase
Joseph’s name carries the sense “may he add.” In this moment, his brothers’ encounter gains the truth of the identity that has been withheld from them.
ALSO GROWS
yāsaf: To add or increase
יָסַף
This is the verbal root carried in Joseph’s name, giving the name its sense of addition.
wayyōsef: He added, or continued
וַיֹּסֶף
This biblical form carries the same root into action; Joseph’s name holds the idea of something added or brought further.
THE PATTERN
A hidden identity becomes recognizable through direct encounter and disclosure.
And Joseph said unto his brethren, I am Joseph; doth my father yet live? And his brethren could not answer him; for they were troubled at his presence. And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.THE THREAD
And he washed his face, and went out, and refrained himself, and said, Set on bread. The Hebrew verb behind “refrained himself” is from the same root as “refrain himself” here. In Genesis 43:31 Joseph contains his response and returns; in Genesis 45:1 he cannot contain it and clears the room to reveal himself.
