And they told him all the words of Joseph, which he had said unto them: and when he saw the wagons which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of Jacob their father revived:

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
Jacob’s ruach is breath and life in motion: what Joseph sends makes the message visible, and Jacob comes alive again.
THE MEANING
The report reaches Jacob, but the wagons let him see that Joseph is alive and a way forward is opening. The verse describes Jacob’s breath and life as returning when what he hears becomes something present before him. It meets you in the space between hearing that life is possible and seeing something arrive that lets life stir.
THE ROOT
וַתְּחִי
vattechi
GROWS FROM
חיה
To live, be alive, or come to life.
The verb behind “revived” says that life itself becomes active again. Jacob’s change is not merely a shift in thought: the verse names it as coming alive.
ALSO GROWS
chai: Living, alive.
חַי
This branch makes Jacob’s return a movement into life, not simply a change of opinion.
chayyim: Life, living.
חַיִּים
The shared root links Jacob’s moment of revival to life as a whole.
שָׁלַח
shalach
GROWS FROM
שלח
To send forth, release, or let go.
The wagons are what Joseph sends to carry Jacob; the verse gives release a concrete shape. What is sent makes a way out of the place where Jacob’s life had stopped moving.
ALSO GROWS
shaluaḥ: Sent, dispatched.
שָׁלוּחַ
The wagons are sent provision, carrying Joseph’s message into Jacob’s sight.
shaliaḥ: A messenger, one who is sent.
שָׁלִיחַ
The wagons themselves carry a message: Joseph is alive, and Jacob can come to him.
רוּחַ
ruach
GROWS FROM
רוח
Breath, wind, or moving air.
The word rendered “spirit” is ruach, the same Hebrew word used for breath and wind. English separates these senses, while the verse lets Jacob’s ruach be the living breath that returns.
ALSO GROWS
ruach: Breath.
רוּחַ
This is the breath of Jacob that the verse says comes alive again.
ruach: Wind.
רוּחַ
The same word for moving air connects Jacob’s inward return to life with breath in motion.
THE PATTERN
Life and trust can return when what was only reported becomes tangible.
And told him, saying, Joseph is yet alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt. And Jacob’s heart fainted, for he believed them not.The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life. And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.THE THREAD
The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.Job places ruach and life together: breath is bound to the act of living. Genesis shows that connection in Jacob’s own return to life when he sees what Joseph has sent.
