This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

At the news of Jacob’s sickness, Joseph brings two names into the room: hardship forgotten and fruitfulness still unfolding.

You see Joseph bring his sons near as their grandfather’s strength fails. Their names hold two strands of the family story, hardship receding and fruitfulness continuing, beside the body’s vulnerability.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A parent’s weakness does not mean the family’s life has stopped unfolding.

חֹלֶה

ḥoleh

GROWS FROM

ח־ל־ה

ḥ-l-h

To be weak or sick; in another biblical use, to entreat or implore.

This root can name bodily sickness and Moses’ entreaty, joining weakness with appeal. English separates those scenes into “sick” and “besought,” while the Hebrew root carries an echo between them.

ALSO GROWS

ḥoli: Sickness, illness.

חֹלִי

This noun shares the root of Jacob’s “sick,” keeping illness within the same word family.

vayechal: He entreated, implored.

וַיְחַל

Moses’ plea in Exodus 32:11 uses this root, linking sickness with a vulnerable appeal.

אֶפְרָיִם

Ephrayim

GROWS FROM

פ־ר־ה

p-r-h

To bear fruit, become fruitful; the name echoes Joseph’s words that God made him fruitful.

Ephraim’s name carries fruitfulness into the scene. The name stands beside a father’s sickness, placing continuing growth in the same family moment as physical decline.

ALSO GROWS

hiphrani: He made me fruitful.

הִפְרַנִי

This is Joseph’s wording in Genesis 41:52, which explains the fruitfulness carried in Ephraim’s name.

vayyifru: And they were fruitful.

וַיִּפְרוּ

This form in Genesis 47:27 uses the same root to describe a family’s growth.

מְנַשֶּׁה

Menasheh

GROWS FROM

נ־שׁ־ה

n-sh-h

To forget; in the name’s biblical wordplay, to cause Joseph to forget his hardship.

Manasseh carries Joseph’s account of hardship receding from memory. Beside Ephraim’s fruitfulness, the name holds what is left behind alongside what continues to grow.

ALSO GROWS

nashah: To forget.

נָשָׁה

This is the root sense from which the name’s wordplay grows.

nashani: He made me forget.

נַשַּׁנִי

This form in Genesis 41:51 is Joseph’s explanation for naming his son Manasseh.

At a family threshold, what one generation carries becomes visible in the next.

And it came to pass, that when Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he called Esau his eldest son, and said unto him, My son: and he said unto him, Behold, here am I.
Genesis 27:1 · KJVIsaac’s failing sight brings his son into an encounter at the threshold of the family blessing.
By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff.
Hebrews 11:21 · KJVAs Jacob nears death, Joseph’s sons stand before him to receive what he carries forward.
When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.
2 Timothy 1:5 · KJVThe verse traces what lives in Timothy through his mother and grandmother, making the passage between generations visible.
And Moses besought the LORD his God, and said, LORD, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand?
Exodus 32:11 · KJV

The word for Jacob’s sickness and Moses’ “besought” share ⁨חלה⁩ (ḥ-l-h), meaning to be weak or sick and, in another use, to entreat. The shared root links bodily vulnerability with pleading, giving Jacob’s illness a word-level echo in Moses’ appeal.
