THE KEY
Strength here is the capacity to ready yourself for an encounter, even while remaining on the bed.
THE MEANING
Your strength can be real before your circumstances change: it can appear as the steadiness that lets you meet what is coming. Israel gathers himself while remaining on the bed, holding readiness and physical limitation together. Strength here does not erase the body’s need for support.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that strength only counts when your body can rise, move freely, or act without support.
THE ROOT
וַיִּתְחַזֵּק
vayitchazeq
GROWS FROM
חזק
Be strong, make firm, hold fast.
“strengthened himself” in this verse is vayitchazeq. The verb takes a reflexive form, presenting Israel as gathering strength within himself. Elsewhere the same root means to hold fast, so strengthening carries the sense of becoming firm enough to meet the moment.
ALSO GROWS
chazaq: Be strong, grow firm, prevail.
חָזַק
This basic form shows strength as firmness that can take hold, not only as outward power.
echezeq b'yadekha: I will hold your hand.
אֶחֱזֵק בְּיָדֶךָ
In Isaiah 42:6, the same root describes a steadying hold, linking strength with support.
THE PATTERN
Strength can appear as inner firmness that makes a response possible within weakness.
Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.THE THREAD
I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; The same root as “strengthened himself” appears as “hold” in Isaiah’s “will hold thine hand.” The link opens strength as a firmness that can be gathered inward or offered as a steadying hold.
