THE KEY
What comes after is gathered into the present and set before the hearers in words.
THE MEANING
You are brought into a gathering where what comes next is spoken before it arrives. “Last days” carries the sense of the after-part, the shape that follows from here. The future stands before the hearer as something that can be named.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This unsettles the belief that what follows is always invisible until it arrives: here, the after-part is spoken while the hearers are still gathered.
THE ROOT
הֵאָסְפוּ
heʾāsəp̄ū
GROWS FROM
אָסַף
ʾāsap̄
To gather, collect, or bring in.
“gather” in this verse is heʾāsəp̄ū. Hebrew uses the same root for drawing people together and for the ingathering of a harvest. The sons are gathered before their coming season is named, so the word carries the sense of bringing a whole into view.
ALSO GROWS
ʾāsîp̄: Ingathering; harvest gathering.
אָסִיף
The same root gathers a harvest at its season, giving this family gathering a sense of collecting what is ready to be brought into view.
ʾasuppāh: Assembly; collection.
אֲסֻפָּה
This branch names a group brought together, echoing the sons’ assembly before Jacob speaks.
בְּאַחֲרִית הַיָּמִים
bəʾaḥarīt hayyāmīm
GROWS FROM
אַחַר
ʾ-ḥ-r
After; what is behind or comes afterward.
“last days” in this verse is bəʾaḥarīt hayyāmīm. The word for “last” carries the sense of the after-part: what follows from the present, not only a remote endpoint. The phrase names the future shape while the hearers are gathered in the present.
ALSO GROWS
aḥărê: After; afterward.
אַחֲרֵי
This common form makes the root’s sense of what follows plain.
aḥărôn: Last; latter.
אַחֲרוֹן
This related form describes what comes later in a sequence, illuminating “last days” as the days that follow.
וְאַגִּידָה
veʾaggīdāh
GROWS FROM
נָגַד
n-g-d
To make known or declare; a related form means what is in front of someone.
“tell” in this verse is veʾaggīdāh. The verb for telling shares its root with a word meaning “before” or “in front of.” What comes next is not only predicted; it is set before the gathered hearers as something spoken plainly.
ALSO GROWS
neged: Before; in front of; opposite.
נֶגֶד
This related form makes the image of what is set before the hearers visible in the act of telling.
maggīd: One who tells or declares.
מַגִּיד
This noun keeps the root’s sense of making something known through speech.
THE PATTERN
What follows can be spoken into view while the present is gathered around it.
For I know that after my death ye will utterly corrupt yourselves, and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will befall you in the latter days; because ye will do evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger through the work of your hands. And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:THE THREAD
Also in the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when ye have gathered in the fruit of the land, ye shall keep a feast unto the LORD seven days: on the first day shall be a sabbath, and on the eighth day shall be a sabbath.Leviticus uses the same אסף root in “when ye have gathered in” that Genesis uses in “Gather yourselves together.” The root brings a dispersed harvest, or a dispersed family, into one view, and here that gathering comes just before the future is named.
