THE KEY
The burial cave is part of an acquisition: the ground that holds the dead is also ground someone owns.
THE MEANING
A place for burial remains embedded in the tangible world of possession: the field and cave are named together as one acquisition. The people from whom it comes remain present in the wording, so the possession carries its source within it.
THE ROOT
מִקְנֵה
miqneh
GROWS FROM
קנה
To acquire, obtain, or possess.
The word for purchase belongs to the same root used for acquiring and possessing. The verse frames the burial place as one acquired holding: field and cave joined in the language of what is held.
ALSO GROWS
qānîtî: I have gotten or acquired.
קָנִיתִי
This form appears in Eve’s words at Cain’s birth, showing the root’s language of acquisition beyond the purchase of property.
qōnēh: Possessor.
קֹנֵה
This form names God as possessor of heaven and earth, extending the root from a purchased holding to possession on the widest scale.
THE PATTERN
A place becomes a possession through a concrete exchange that establishes who holds it.
And the field, and the cave that is therein, were made sure unto Abraham for a possession of a buryingplace by the sons of Heth. And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the LORD my God of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.THE THREAD
And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.“I have gotten” translates קָנִיתִי (qānîtî, acquired), from the same root קנה (qānâ, acquire) as מִקְנֵה (miqneh, purchase) in Genesis 49:32. The root’s language appears at a birth and again in the securing of burial ground.
