THE KEY
Even 969 years cannot outrun the final verb: the longest lifespan in the genealogy still ends with death.
THE MEANING
This verse speaks to you now: even a life stretched far beyond ordinary measure remains finite. Methuselah’s 969 years do not cancel the final words, “and he died”; longevity is not an exemption from death.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that enough time can make a human life exempt from death: even an extraordinary lifespan has an ending.
THE ROOT
וַיָּמֹת
vayyamot
GROWS FROM
מות
m-w-t
To die; to come to death.
“died” in this verse is vayyamot. The verb is built from the root also found in מָוֶת (māwet), “death.” Hebrew holds the counted span and its ending in one compact formula: the extraordinary number cannot displace the ending.
ALSO GROWS
māwet: death
מָוֶת
The noun makes explicit the reality named by the verse’s final verb.
mēt: dead
מֵת
This related form names the state reached when the living span ends.
THE PATTERN
A human lifespan can be measured in years, but no length of years removes its boundary in death.
And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died.A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:THE THREAD
And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died. The same Hebrew root מות (m-w-t), “to die,” ends both lifespan records. The repeated structure lets you see the final verb as a boundary shared across generations, not something erased by an unusually long life.
