This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The flood’s turning point is upstream: its sources close before the waters recede.

Overwhelm is not limitless: the verse presents the source itself as subject to closure. The waters pouring from below and above are stopped at their openings, and the rain is held back. What has been released can meet a boundary before it has fully receded.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie that overwhelm has no stopping point is undone here: restraint reaches the source, not only the waters already in motion.

וַיִּכָּלֵא

vayikkale

GROWS FROM

כלא

k-l-ʾ

To hold in, shut up, or restrain.

“restrained” in this verse is vayikkale. This root presents restraint as active containment: the rain is held within a boundary. Its branches name both confinement and the act of holding back, so the verse pictures the downpour as shut in.

ALSO GROWS

kele: Prison; confinement.

כֶּלֶא

The prison is a place where movement is held within bounds, echoing the rain being restrained.

kala: To hold back or restrain.

כָּלָא

This verb shows that the rain’s restraint reaches the force itself, not only its effects.

מַעְיְנֹת

ma'yanot

GROWS FROM

עין

ʿayin

Eye; also associated with a spring or source.

“fountains” in this verse is ma'yanot. The spring word is built from the same root as the word for an eye: a spring is an opening where hidden water comes into view. That makes the closure exact, the outlets through which the deep appears are shut.

ALSO GROWS

ʿayin: Eye.

עַיִן

The shared root links a visible opening in the body with an opening where water emerges from the earth.

ma'yan: Spring; fountain; source of water.

מַעְיָן

This is the singular form of the word for the fountains whose openings close in the verse.

Overwhelming waters meet a boundary when their sources are shut or their reach is limited.

In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
Genesis 7:11 · KJVThe same fountains and windows open, showing the sources through which the waters enter.
And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?
Job 38:11 · KJVThe sea is given a limit beyond which its waves cannot pass.
And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
Mark 4:39 · KJVA command stills the wind and sea, and the turmoil gives way to calm.
In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
Genesis 7:11 · KJV

The same fountains and windows that open there close here, while the rain is held back as well. The repeated image makes the turn concrete: the flood’s exit begins at the openings through which it came.
