What Does Habakkuk 1:9 Mean in the King James?
They shall come all for violence: their faces shall sup up as the east wind, and they shall gather the captivity as the sand.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
Violence is not collateral to this advance; it is the purpose, and people become its harvest.
THE MEANING
The verse names the living pattern of a force whose purpose is violence: its gaze stays fixed ahead, and people become a mass to gather, countless as sand. Under that gaze, captive lives are treated as spoils rather than as distinct persons.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the claim that violence is incidental to conquest: here violence is named as the purpose, and human beings are what the force gathers.
THE ROOT
קָדִימָה
qadimah
GROWS FROM
קדם
Be in front or precede; by extension, eastward.
“east wind” in this verse is qadimah. The word behind the eastward image comes from a root whose range joins east with what is in front and what comes before. The image carries a direction of advance: their faces are fixed on what lies ahead.
ALSO GROWS
qedem: East; front; former time
קֶדֶם
This branch joins spatial direction with what comes before, giving the army’s forward-facing gaze a sense of relentless advance.
qadim: East wind
קָדִים
The wind image carries the root’s eastward direction, linking the force’s movement with the way its faces are set.
וַיֶּאֱסֹף
wayye'esof
GROWS FROM
אסף
Gather, collect, bring together.
The verse uses אָסַף (asaph), “gather,” for collecting captives. The same root names the ingathering of a harvest and a gatherer who brings in what trails behind; the root says collection, while the violence lies in what is done to those collected.
ALSO GROWS
asif: Ingathering; harvest season
אָסִיף
This branch makes the captives’ collection feel like a harvest, people gathered as a yield.
me'assef: Gatherer; rear guard
מְאַסֵּף
A gatherer can bring in those who trail behind; here the same collecting force takes people into captivity.
THE PATTERN
Conquest turns people into captives to be collected, making their number a sign of its reach.
And he carried away all Jerusalem, and all the princes, and all the mighty men of valour, even ten thousand captives, and all the craftsmen and smiths: none remained, save the poorest sort of the people of the land. Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they carried away captive the whole captivity, to deliver them up to Edom:He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.THE THREAD
And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.Habakkuk’s “gather” is אָסַף (asaph), to gather or collect; Isaiah uses the same root to gather the dispersed. The same verb can name a collection that makes people spoil or a gathering that brings scattered people back together.
