This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

God’s consuming fire names a presence that does not leave what it touches untouched.

God is not a distant idea here: God is present as fire that consumes. The image is severe; it does not describe a presence that leaves everything as it was. It speaks now of a God whose nature cannot be treated as harmless background.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that God’s nearness leaves everything exactly as it is.

καταναλίσκων

katanalískōn

GROWS FROM

⁨ἀναλίσκω⁩ (analískō), in the compound ⁨καταναλίσκω⁩

To consume or use up; the compound presents the consuming forcefully.

The Greek gives “consuming” as an active participle: the fire consumes. The same verb family can describe people devouring one another, so the word names what the action does, not merely how the fire looks.

ALSO GROWS

katanalískō: Consume

καταναλίσκω

Luke 9:54 uses this compound for fire that would consume a village, making the fire’s action explicit.

analískō: Consume, devour

ἀναλίσκω

Galatians 5:15 warns that people can be “consumed one of another”; the same root describes a force that uses up what is in its reach.

אֹכְלָה

okhlah

GROWS FROM

אכל

ʾ-k-l

Eat, consume.

“consuming” in this verse is okhlah. The Hebrew wording in Deuteronomy 4:24 calls God an “eating fire.” The root also gives the word for food, bringing both sides of eating, the one that consumes and what is consumed, into the image.

ALSO GROWS

akal: Eat

אָכַל

This verb makes the fire’s consuming action concrete: it eats what lies before it.

maʾakhal: Food, something eaten

מַאֲכָל

This related word carries the other side of the same image: what the fire takes in.

When scripture pictures God’s presence as fire, it consumes or tests what stands within its reach.

For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.
Deuteronomy 4:24 · KJVThe same consuming-fire image names God’s presence as an active force.
And the sight of the glory of the LORD was like devouring fire on the top of the mount in the eyes of the children of Israel.
Exodus 24:17 · KJVThe fire is described as devouring, showing the force of divine presence in what is seen.
Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.
1 Corinthians 3:13 · KJVHere fire tests what is built, making its true quality visible.
For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.
Deuteronomy 4:24 · KJV

Hebrews repeats the Greek wording used for “consuming fire” in the Greek text of Deuteronomy, whose Hebrew phrase is ⁨אֵשׁ אֹכְלָה⁩ (esh okhlah), “an eating fire.” The Hebrew root ⁨אכל⁩ (ʾ-k-l), “eat,” makes the image tangible: the fire takes in and consumes what is before it.
