What Does Hosea 1:10 Mean in the King James?
Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.

THE KEY
The place that names a people “not mine” becomes the very place where they are named as children of the living God.
THE MEANING
The word that calls you outside is not the final word over you. Where exclusion is spoken, a new belonging is spoken: sons of the living God. Your place in that family is pictured as part of an abundance no human tally can contain.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Being named outside means you are permanently outside, and that exclusion defines who you are.
THE ROOT
יִסָּפֵר
yissāphēr
GROWS FROM
ס־פ־ר
s-p-r
To count or number; also to recount or relate.
The Hebrew root behind “numbered” also carries the sense of recounting. The multitude exceeds a tally, while the verse gives this people a spoken identity: children of the living God.
ALSO GROWS
sōphēr: Scribe; one who counts or records.
סוֹפֵר
The same root appears in the person who keeps a count or account, linking enumeration with recordkeeping.
sēfer: Book or written record.
סֵפֶר
A count can become a written account; here, no account can contain the size of the people being described.
בְּנֵי
bənê
GROWS FROM
ב־נ־ה
b-n-h
To build or establish; the family word for “son” is connected with this root.
The word for sons carries a family-building image: belonging extends through generations. “Sons of the living God” names a relationship and a continuing family, not merely a count of individuals.
ALSO GROWS
bēn: Son.
בֵּן
The singular form names a member of the family whose growth the verse pictures as beyond numbering.
bānāh: To build or establish.
בָּנָה
This related verb opens the image of a family being built across generations.
THE PATTERN
A word that marks exclusion can be followed by a spoken identity that restores belonging and opens into abundance.
That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the LORD shall name. And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.THE THREAD
Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.Hosea’s “numbered” and the Psalm’s “numbered” share the root ס־פ־ר (s-p-r), which can mean counting or recounting. The Psalm places what exceeds numbering beside the attempt to declare it, echoing Hosea’s immeasurable people and the identity spoken over them.
