This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

They do not ask the mountains to rescue them; they ask to be covered until the only refuge left is disappearance.

When a sanctuary you rely on is exposed as hollow, what felt permanent can become overgrown and uninhabitable. The plea turns from seeking refuge to asking the surrounding world to cover you, even if that covering means the world collapsing over you. The verse leaves that terror intact.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that a place of devotion is therefore a secure refuge: the altars are overgrown, and the people beg the hills to hide them.

כַּסּוּנוּ

kassūnū

GROWS FROM

כסה

Cover, conceal

“Cover us” in this verse is kassūnū. The root ⁨כסה⁩ (kasah) means to cover or conceal, and here the speakers ask the landscape itself to cover them. With hills falling in the parallel line, this covering carries the force of crushing disappearance, not simply shelter.

ALSO GROWS

kissah: He covered

כִּסָּה

The same root names the act of covering that the speakers plead for.

mekhusseh: Covered, concealed

מְכֻסֶּה

This form shows the state the speakers seek: hidden beneath a covering.

מִזְבְּחוֹתָם

mizbeḥotam

GROWS FROM

זבח

Slaughter, sacrifice

The Hebrew word for altar, ⁨מִזְבֵּחַ⁩ (mizbeach), is formed from ⁨זבח⁩ (zavach), the root for sacrifice or slaughter. When thorns overtake the altars, the place organized around sacrifice is swallowed by wild growth.

ALSO GROWS

zavach: He sacrificed

זָבַח

The verb exposes the altar’s connection to the act performed there.

zevaḥ: Sacrifice

זֶבַח

This noun shares the altar’s root and makes its sacrificial purpose audible within the verse.

When trusted sanctuaries fail, fear seeks concealment beneath the very landscape that cannot protect from collapse.

And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.
Isaiah 2:19 · KJVAs the earth shakes, people retreat into its caves, seeking concealment in the landscape.
Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us.
Luke 23:30 · KJVThe cry for mountains to fall and hills to cover gives terror the same desperate shape.
And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
Revelation 6:16 · KJVPeople ask the mountains to fall and hide them, turning the landscape into a last imagined concealment.
Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us.
Luke 23:30 · KJV

The same mountain-and-hill cry surfaces in Luke, with the requests to fall and cover exchanged between the two landforms. The echo makes Hosea’s plea part of a recurring image: terror seeks concealment in the very landscape bearing down on it.
