What Does Hosea 11:2 Mean in the King James?
As they called them, so they went from them: they sacrificed unto Baalim, and burned incense to graven images.

THE KEY
Being called does not guarantee movement toward the caller; the call can become the point from which devotion turns elsewhere.
THE MEANING
The verse names the distance between being called and moving toward the caller: the call reaches, but the response turns away. You can be drawn by one voice and give your attention and allegiance to other powers, making that turn visible in what receives your devotion. The line leaves the movement exposed rather than disguising it as harmless drift.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that receiving a call or performing religious rites proves your devotion remains with the one who calls; the direction of your response exposes where your allegiance goes.
THE ROOT
קָרְאָם
qārəʾām
GROWS FROM
קרא
q-r-ʾ
Call out, summon, or proclaim.
“called” in this verse is qārəʾām. This root carries the sense of an address directed toward someone, not a mere label. The verse’s sharp turn is that those addressed move away from the callers.
ALSO GROWS
qore: One who calls or reads.
קוֹרֵא
The same root joins calling aloud with reading aloud, keeping the spoken address in view.
miqra: A reading or convocation.
מִקְרָא
This branch shows the root can name a summons gathered into a public reading or assembly.
הָלְכוּ
haləkhu
GROWS FROM
הלך
h-l-k
Walk, go, or move along a way.
The English “went” can sound like a bare change of place, while this root also carries the sense of walking a path. Their response is directional: they move away from those calling and toward another object of devotion.
ALSO GROWS
holekh: One who walks or goes.
הוֹלֵךְ
This form makes the shared root’s movement concrete: a person is going somewhere.
halikhah: Walking or going.
הֲלִיכָה
This noun names the movement itself, underscoring that the response is a course taken.
בְּעָלִים
bəʿālîm
GROWS FROM
בעל
b-ʿ-l
Master or owner; also husband.
Baalim is the plural form naming the Baals, while the same Hebrew word בעל (baʿal, “master” or “owner”) also means “husband.” That overlap makes the redirection legible as devotion given to rival claimants, without reducing the named gods to a metaphor.
ALSO GROWS
baʿal: Master, owner, or husband.
בַּעַל
The ordinary meanings of the same word lend the Baalim their resonance as rival lords.
beʿulah: Married or claimed.
בְּעוּלָה
This related form carries the language of a bond or claim, echoing the question of where allegiance is given.
THE PATTERN
When a call is refused, devotion does not stay empty; movement and worship turn toward another object.
Therefore will I number you to the sword, and ye shall all bow down to the slaughter: because when I called, ye did not answer; when I spake, ye did not hear; but did evil before mine eyes, and did choose that wherein I delighted not. They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not.Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.THE THREAD
But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.Jeremiah uses the same root הלך (halak, “walk” or “go”) that Hosea uses for “went”: here the walk follows the heart’s own counsel and moves backward. The shared root makes Hosea’s departure a path with a direction, and Jeremiah names that same turn as regression.
