This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

A return that does not turn upward is movement without realignment, and, like a deceitful bow, it can carry force while betraying its aim.

You can turn back without turning upward: movement alone does not restore alignment. The verse holds the violence plainly: princes fall by the sword for the rage of their tongue, and their failure becomes public derision in Mitzrayim, the land of constriction.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse undoes the belief that turning back by itself means you have returned to what is whole; a turn can still aim away.

רְמִיָּה

remiyyah

GROWS FROM

רמה

ramah

To deceive, mislead, or betray.

“deceitful” in this verse is remiyyah. Remiyyah makes the bow more than weak: it seems to serve its aim, then sends its force astray. The verse joins the failed return and the bow in one image, movement that betrays its direction.

ALSO GROWS

ramah: To deceive or mislead.

רָמָה

The bow’s failure is framed as betrayal: it does not carry the force where its aim promises.

mirmah: Deceit or fraud.

מִרְמָה

This branch shows the gap between an appearance of direction and the outcome that direction produces.

יָשׁוּבוּ

yashuvu

GROWS FROM

שׁוּב

shuv

To turn or return.

Shuv names a turning, but the verse shows that turning alone does not settle where the return is headed. Their movement comes back without turning upward toward wholeness.

ALSO GROWS

teshuvah: Return or turning back.

תְּשׁוּבָה

The shared root keeps the focus on the direction of the turn, not merely the fact that someone turns.

heishiv: To bring back or restore.

הֵשִׁיב

This causative branch makes the distinction vivid: turning back is not the same as being brought back into wholeness.

מִצְרַיִם

Mitzrayim

GROWS FROM

צַר

tsar

Narrow, constricting, tight.

“Egypt” in this verse is Mitzrayim. The verse ends in Mitzrayim, the two narrows: the failed return leaves them exposed in constriction. The public derision marks a movement that has not reached wholeness.

ALSO GROWS

tsar: Narrow or constricted.

צַר

This root gives the land’s name its image of narrowed space, fitting the verse’s failed movement toward wholeness.

tsarah: Distress or trouble.

צָרָה

The branch links constriction with the trouble that becomes visible in the princes’ fall and public derision.

Turning back without reorientation returns a person to the same betrayal and ruin.

But turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitful bow.
Psalm 78:57 · KJVThe same deceitful bow makes the failed turn visible: movement bends away from its true aim.
And yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah hath not turned unto me with her whole heart, but feignedly, saith the LORD.
Jeremiah 3:10 · KJVA turn can appear to happen while the heart remains pointed elsewhere.
But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.
2 Peter 2:22 · KJVThe return leads back into the same ruin rather than out of it.
But turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitful bow.
Psalm 78:57 · KJV

Psalm 78 uses the same Hebrew image, ⁨קֶשֶׁת רְמִיָּה⁩ (qeshet remiyyah), “a deceitful bow,” to show a turn that bends away instead of holding its aim. Hosea sharpens the image: the failed return is exposed in the princes’ fall and the rage of their tongue.
