What Does Hosea 7:9 Mean in the King James?
Strangers have devoured his strength, and he knoweth it not: yea, gray hairs are here and there upon him, yet he knoweth not.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The verse’s deepest depletion is the failure to perceive that depletion is happening.
THE MEANING
You can be losing strength without recognizing it; signs of change may already be scattered across you. The repeated “he knoweth it not” makes that lack of awareness part of the loss: what is happening is present, even before it enters your perception.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Not noticing your depletion does not mean you are unchanged; the verse places visible signs beside the absence of awareness.
THE ROOT
יָדָע
yada
GROWS FROM
ידע
yada
To know, recognize, or perceive.
“knoweth” in this verse is yada. Yada can describe knowing through encounter. Here, the loss and its signs are already present, but they have not become recognized by the one experiencing them; the verse repeats that gap twice.
ALSO GROWS
da'at: Knowledge, understanding, or recognition.
דַּעַת
This related noun shows knowing as recognition; Hosea describes what happens when that recognition fails to meet what is already occurring.
hodi'a: To make known or inform.
הוֹדִיעַ
This causative form highlights the missing movement into awareness: the condition is there, but it has not become known to him.
זָרְקָה
zarqah
GROWS FROM
זרק
zaraq
To throw, cast, or sprinkle.
“sprinkled” in this verse is zarqah. The Hebrew verb pictures grayness scattered over him, while the KJV renders it “here and there.” The sound pair זָרִים (zarim, “strangers”) and זָרְקָה (zarqah, “was scattered”) echoes across two different roots, joining what is foreign to him with the signs dispersed across him.
ALSO GROWS
zriqah: A throwing, scattering, or sprinkling.
זְרִיקָה
This noun keeps the image of something dispersed, as the signs of age appear across him rather than in one isolated place.
mizraq: A basin used for sprinkling or dashing liquid.
מִזְרָק
This related word carries the same scattering action into an object associated with pouring or sprinkling.
THE PATTERN
A condition can worsen in full view while the person living it fails to recognize it.
And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him.The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:THE THREAD
And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. The Hebrew “knew,” יָדְעוּ (yade’u, “they knew”), comes from the same root, ידע (yada), repeated in Hosea. Genesis places knowing after their eyes open; Hosea shows signs already on the body without recognition, revealing that what is visible does not always become perceived.
