This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

Samaria’s calf is caught inside the Hebrew verb of rejection, so the thing made for security becomes part of the abandonment.

When you treat a made thing as divine protection, it cannot secure you from rejection; the verse holds burning anger and uncleared guilt in the same scene. Its “how long” leaves the lack of cleanness open in the present.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A sacred image guarantees favor and innocence to those who rely on it.

זָנַח

zānaḥ

GROWS FROM

זנח

to reject, spurn, or cast away

“cast off” in this verse is zānaḥ. The root carries the force of rejection. Its use for both being rejected and fearing abandonment places Samaria’s calf inside that same field: it cannot function as shelter.

ALSO GROWS

yiznaḥ: he will reject or cast off

יִזְנַח

Psalm 77:7 uses this form to ask whether the LORD will cast off forever, showing the root’s direct connection to abandonment.

zenaḥtānu: you have rejected us

זְנַחְתָּנוּ

Psalm 44:9 uses the same root for rejection, making the rupture named in Hosea part of a recurring scriptural pattern.

נִקָּיוֹן

niqqāyōn

GROWS FROM

נקה

to be clean, cleared, or free from guilt

English “innocency” can sound like a quality someone simply possesses; ⁨נקה⁩ also carries the sense of being cleared or freed from guilt. The verse asks how long they remain unable to reach that cleared condition.

ALSO GROWS

wənaqqēh: and clearing or acquitting

וְנַקֵּה

Exodus 34:7 uses this form in the declaration that God will not clear the guilty, connecting cleanness with the unresolved weight of guilt.

wəniqqāh: and he shall be cleared or free from guilt

וְנִקָּה

Numbers 5:31 uses this form for being free from guilt, giving the verse’s “innocency” a concrete sense of release from liability.

What human hands fashion cannot carry the trust assigned to the living God.

They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them.
Psalm 115:8 · KJVThe maker and the one who trusts the crafted image become bound to what cannot protect them.
He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?
Isaiah 44:20 · KJVThe object held as a source of security cannot deliver the person who depends on it.
Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.
Acts 17:29 · KJVThe verse exposes the limit of treating something fashioned by human hands as an image of God.
Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more?
Psalm 77:7 · KJV

Both verses use the Hebrew root ⁨זנח⁩ (zānaḥ, reject or cast off). Hosea binds rejection to Samaria’s calf; the psalm turns the same verb into a present question about whether rejection continues forever.
