What Does Hosea 9:6 Mean in the King James?
For, lo, they are gone because of destruction: Egypt shall gather them up, Memphis shall bury them: the pleasant places for their silver, nettles shall possess them: thorns shall be in their tabernacles.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The nettle is more than a sign of abandonment: it becomes the new possessor.
THE MEANING
The verse names displacement without softening it: devastation sends people away, constriction gathers them, and Memphis closes the road in burial. Their silver-associated treasures do not keep their place secure; nettles take possession, and thorns enter the tents that once sheltered them. The human claimant disappears from the scene while wild growth remains.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that a valuable home secures its owner is undone here: silver cannot keep the people present, and the place can pass to another claimant.
THE ROOT
יִירָשֵׁם
yireshem
GROWS FROM
י־ר־שׁ
To take possession or inherit; in a causative form, to dispossess.
“possess” in this verse is yireshem. The Hebrew word can carry both inheriting and dispossessing: possession is a transfer of occupancy, not a permanent claim. Nettles become heirs to what people prized, making the verse’s reversal grammatical as well as visual.
ALSO GROWS
yarash: Possess, inherit
יָרַשׁ
The nettles’ action belongs to an inheritance word: they become the succeeding claimants.
yerushah: Inheritance, possession
יְרֻשָּׁה
The place reads like an estate changing hands, though its inheritor is weed growth.
horish: Dispossess, drive out
הוֹרִישׁ
The same root can describe expelling one claimant so another can occupy; possession here implies that the human occupants are gone.
מִצְרַיִם
Mitzrayim
GROWS FROM
צ־ר־ר
To bind, press in, or constrain; צַר (tsar) means narrow or tight.
“Egypt” in this verse is Mitzrayim. Mitzrayim carries the image of the two narrowings, from tzar, narrow. Here the place that gathers the displaced is itself an image of constriction, and Memphis closes that movement in burial.
ALSO GROWS
tsar: Narrow, tight
צַר
This gives Egypt’s name the shape of constricted space.
metzar: A narrow place, a strait
מֵצַר
The word makes the verse’s movement into Egypt feel like passage into a tight place.
tsarah: Distress, trouble, straits
צָרָה
The same constriction is felt as distress, joining the place of gathering to the people’s displacement.
מַחְמַד
machmad
GROWS FROM
ח־מ־ד
To desire, take delight in, or covet.
“pleasant” in this verse is machmad. Machmad names what is desirable and precious, here associated with silver. The possession verb then makes that valued thing the very object taken over by nettles.
ALSO GROWS
chamad: Desire, covet
חָמַד
The root shows that the pleasant thing is something actively desired and prized.
nechmad: Desirable, delightful
נֶחְמָד
This branch echoes the quality of what is lost: what seemed delightful does not remain secure.
THE PATTERN
When a place loses its fruitful tending, thorns make the loss visible.
And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down. And I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned, nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.THE THREAD
But the cormorant and the bittern shall possess it; the owl also and the raven shall dwell in it: and he shall stretch out upon it the line of confusion, and the stones of emptiness.Isaiah uses the same root י־ר־שׁ (yarash, possess or inherit) when wild birds take possession of a devastated land. Hosea makes nettles the inheritors of prized holdings; Isaiah widens the image to wild creatures occupying the emptied place.
