What Does Isaiah 10:19 Mean in the King James?
And the rest of the trees of his forest shall be few, that a child may write them.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The forest’s survivors are so few that its apparent vastness becomes a child’s written count.
THE MEANING
What fills the horizon can become small enough to count. The verse speaks to the moment when sheer scale no longer conceals how little remains.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that whatever looks vast must be beyond measure: even a forest can dwindle to a child-sized tally.
THE ROOT
מִסְפָּר
mispar
GROWS FROM
ס־פ־ר
s-p-r
To count, recount, or tell.
The Hebrew word rendered “few” is literally about number or counting. Its root also gives rise to a word for a written record, linking the dwindled forest to the child’s act of writing: what once seemed overwhelming now fits in a count.
ALSO GROWS
safar: To count or recount.
סָפַר
The survivors are few enough to be counted.
sefer: A book or written record.
סֵפֶר
The count can be set down in writing, making the forest’s reduced state plain.
יִכְתְּבֵם
yikhtəvem
GROWS FROM
כ־ת־ב
k-t-b
To write or inscribe.
“write them” in this verse is yikhtəvem. The verb presents the survivors as few enough to be entered into a record. The forest’s remaining strength has become a written tally, no longer an ungraspable mass.
ALSO GROWS
ketav: Writing or script.
כְּתָב
The child can set down what remains in written form.
mikhtav: A letter or written document.
מִכְתָּב
This branch carries the root into a written record, like the child’s account of the survivors.
THE PATTERN
What once seemed innumerable can be reduced to a countable remnant.
And ye shall be left few in number, whereas ye were as the stars of heaven for multitude; because thou wouldest not obey the voice of the LORD thy God.Yet gleaning grapes shall be left in it, as the shaking of an olive tree, two or three berries in the top of the uppermost bough, four or five in the outmost fruitful branches thereof, saith the LORD God of Israel.Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:THE THREAD
And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.Isaiah’s child writes the few survivors; Habakkuk uses the same כ־ת־ב (k-t-b), “write,” root to make a vision plain on tablets. The shared root connects writing with making what is present visible and legible.
