This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The deepest fracture is Egypt becoming its own enemy.

God sets Egypt against Egypt, and the violence begins within the people: brother against brother, neighbor against neighbor. The fracture widens from intimate bonds to cities and kingdoms, turning belonging itself into a battlefield. The verse leaves the force of that division stark.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the assumption that a people’s danger always comes from an outside enemy; here, the rupture rises within its own bonds.

מִצְרַיִם

Mitsrayim

GROWS FROM

צ־ר־ר

ts-r-r

To bind, press, or make narrow; ⁨צַר⁩ (tsar) means narrow or distressing.

“Egyptians” in this verse is Mitsrayim. Mitsrayim is heard alongside ⁨מֵצַר⁩ (metzar), “narrow place”: constriction turns inward here. Brother, neighbor, city, and kingdom become the points where a people presses against itself.

ALSO GROWS

metzar: A narrow place, strait, or distress.

מֵצַר

The image of narrowness illuminates the pressure of Egypt turned against Egypt.

tsar: Narrow or distressing; also an adversary.

צָר

The same word-shape can name both pressure and opponent, fitting a conflict in which the people become adversaries to one another.

When division turns inward, the bonds and structures meant to hold a people become the lines along which it breaks.

For the son dishonoureth the father, the daughter riseth up against her mother, the daughter in law against her mother in law; a man’s enemies are the men of his own house.
Micah 7:6 · KJVThe fracture begins inside the household, where the closest bonds become lines of opposition.
And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:
Matthew 12:25 · KJVThe verse names division within a kingdom, city, or house as a force that brings it down.
But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.
Galatians 5:15 · KJVHere the inward conflict becomes mutual consumption: each side’s attack helps destroy the whole.
And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper?
Genesis 4:9 · KJV

The shared Hebrew noun ⁨אָח⁩ (ʾaḥ, brother) is the first bond Isaiah names in the fracture. Genesis places that bond inside a question about responsibility, revealing what division breaks before it reaches the city and kingdom.
