What Does Isaiah 31:9 Mean in the King James?
And he shall pass over to his strong hold for fear, and his princes shall be afraid of the ensign, saith the LORD, whose fire is in Zion, and his furnace in Jerusalem.

THE KEY
The princes’ fear is a shattering, while the LORD’s fire already burns within the city they face.
THE MEANING
The one who appears secure retreats toward a stronghold because fear has reached him, and his princes are dismayed at the ensign. The LORD’s fire is in Zion, and his furnace in Jerusalem: the place under threat is also named as the dwelling of consuming force.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that a threatening power is immune to fear dissolves here: its own princes are the ones who are shattered.
THE ROOT
חַתּוּ
ḥattû
GROWS FROM
חתת
ḥ-t-t
To be shattered, broken down, or dismayed.
The princes’ “afraid” comes from a root that can describe being broken in pieces: fear is their footing breaking beneath them, not merely a passing feeling. The same word-root holds terror and collapse together, while the LORD’s fire remains in Zion.
ALSO GROWS
tēḥat: Be thrown into fear or lose courage (Jeremiah 1:17).
תֵּחַת
It shows the princes’ fear as a collapse of nerve, not just unease.
ḥuttû: Be shattered or broken (Isaiah 8:9).
חֻתּוּ
It reveals the hard edge inside “afraid”: the same root describes what happens when confidence breaks under pressure.
THE PATTERN
Threatening power loses its hold when God’s presence becomes the force acting against it.
And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day;He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire. For our God is a consuming fire.THE THREAD
And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day;Isaiah 10:17 expands the image of the LORD’s fire into flame that consumes what stands against Israel. Here that same consuming presence is located in Zion and Jerusalem, so the city under threat is also the place where the fire already burns.
