What Does Isaiah 38:16 Mean in the King James?
O Lord, by these things men live, and in all these things is the life of my spirit: so wilt thou recover me, and make me to live.

THE KEY
One Hebrew root carries the passage from people living, to the life of the speaker’s breath, to God making him live again: recovery is the same life continuing through another moment.
THE MEANING
Your life is sustained through these things; the life of your breath is held within them. The same sustaining life reaches into weakness and restores you to living now.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Your life depends only on your own capacity to keep going; the verse names God as the one who restores and makes you live.
THE ROOT
וְהַחֲיֵנִי
wehaḥayēnî
GROWS FROM
חיה
Live, be alive; keep alive.
The Hebrew repeats one root, חיה (chayah, “to live”), across “they live,” “life,” and “make me to live,” joining communal survival, the life of the speaker’s breath, and personal restoration. The “spirit” is רוּחִי (rûḥî, “my breath, wind, or spirit”), so the line also speaks of breath as the living movement being sustained.
ALSO GROWS
yichyu: They live.
יִחְיוּ
The same root first describes life shared by people generally.
chayyei: Life of.
חַיֵּי
Here the root names the speaker’s life as bound to the breath within these things.
ḥiyyatnî: You revived me; you made me live.
חִיָּתְנִי
Psalm 119:50 uses this form for the life restored through God’s word, echoing the prayer for restoration here.
THE PATTERN
Life in scripture is received from its source, renewed in the person, and carried forward into abundance.
I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light. The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.THE THREAD
This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me.The same root חיה (chayah, “to live”) appears in Isaiah’s “make me to live” and the psalm’s “quickened me.” Isaiah names life as sustained through “these things”; the psalm names God’s word as what revives it.
