What Does Isaiah 44:17 Mean in the King James?
And the residue thereof he maketh a god, even his graven image: he falleth down unto it, and worshippeth it, and prayeth unto it, and saith, Deliver me; for thou art my god.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The man asks the remnant he shaped into a god to bring him out, the maker assigns his own handiwork the power he needs.
THE MEANING
A thing does not gain the power to deliver simply because you give it a divine name. The verse exposes a dependence that turns back on itself: the one who shaped the object appeals to it for rescue, while it remains a piece of what he used.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that something becomes able to rescue you merely because you give it a sacred name and submit to it.
THE ROOT
הוֹשִׁיעֵנִי
hoshi'eni
GROWS FROM
י־ש־ע
y-sh-ʿ
Deliver, bring out of danger toward safety and spaciousness.
“Deliver me” translates הוֹשִׁיעֵנִי (hoshi’eni), from יָשַׁע (yasha, “deliver”). The plea asks for a way out of constriction, yet it is directed to an object made from leftover wood.
ALSO GROWS
yeshuah: Deliverance, rescue.
יְשׁוּעָה
The same root names the deliverance this worshipper asks the carved object to provide.
moshia: Deliverer, one who brings aid.
מוֹשִׁיעַ
This branch names the one who delivers, sharpening the question of whether a made object can bear that role.
פֶּסֶל
pesel
GROWS FROM
פ־ס־ל
p-s-l
Hew, carve, shape by cutting.
The word for “graven image” grows from a verb for hewing or carving: the object bears the maker’s action in its very name. The verse places that hand-shaped thing beside a plea for deliverance, tying the carved object to the rescue it cannot give.
ALSO GROWS
pasal: To hew or carve.
פָּסַל
The verb names the human work that produces the image.
pesel: A carved image or idol.
פֶּסֶל
The object in the verse is named by the shaping it receives.
THE PATTERN
What human hands form cannot become the source of deliverance its maker seeks.
He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand? They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them.Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.THE THREAD
Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else. The Hebrew behind “Deliver me” here and “be ye saved” there grows from יָשַׁע (yasha, “deliver”). Here the plea is attached to an object carved from residue; there the call to be delivered is directed to God, followed by “I am God, and there is none else.”
