What Does Isaiah 49:6 Mean in the King James?
And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.

THE KEY
The servant’s work of restoring Israel is too small to contain its purpose: it becomes light and deliverance reaching the earth’s edge.
THE MEANING
The restoration of Jacob and Israel is a real work, but it is not the full measure of the servant’s purpose. The servant becomes light among the nations and embodies God’s deliverance as far as the earth reaches. What is returned opens outward beyond its first boundary.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It dissolves the belief that restoration is complete when what is familiar is put back together; its reach keeps opening toward those beyond the familiar circle.
THE ROOT
יְשׁוּעָתִי
yeshuati
GROWS FROM
ישע
yasha
Deliver; bring out of danger or constraint.
“salvation” in this verse is yeshuati. The verb-root יָשַׁע (yasha, deliver) names being brought out. Here, the servant becomes the reach of that deliverance, extending to the earth’s edge.
ALSO GROWS
yeshuah: Deliverance
יְשׁוּעָה
This is the noun form echoed in “my salvation”; the verse presents deliverance as something that reaches outward.
moshia: Deliverer
מוֹשִׁיעַ
This related form names one who brings others out, illuminating the servant’s role in the verse.
נְצִירֵי
netsirei
GROWS FROM
נצר
natsar
Guard, watch over, preserve.
The English “preserved” emphasizes survival, while the same consonants also form נֵצֶר (netser, shoot or branch). The remnant is both kept and living growth, so restoration carries continuation within it.
ALSO GROWS
natsar: Guard, watch, preserve
נָצַר
The root holds the sense of being kept under watch, deepening what it means for Israel to be preserved.
netser: Shoot, branch
נֵצֶר
This branch word pictures what is preserved as living growth, ready to continue.
לְהָשִׁיב
lehashiv
GROWS FROM
שוב
shuv
Return, turn back; bring back.
“restore” in this verse is lehashiv. The Hebrew verb means to cause a return or bring back. Restoration moves through return, allowing what has been held away to reappear within its people.
ALSO GROWS
shuv: Return, turn back
שׁוּב
The root makes the movement of restoration a return rather than a replacement.
teshuvah: Return, turning
תְּשׁוּבָה
This related word carries the same turning-back movement found in the restoration of Israel.
THE PATTERN
Restoration begins among one people and opens into light and deliverance for every people.
I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles;A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.THE THREAD
The LORD hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.“The salvation of our God” carries the same root יָשַׁע (yasha, deliver) as “my salvation” here. One verse names the servant as deliverance reaching the earth’s edge; the other shows the earth’s edge seeing it.
