What Does Isaiah 51:14 Mean in the King James?
The captive exile hasteneth that he may be loosed, and that he should not die in the pit, nor that his bread should fail.

THE KEY
The Hebrew word rendered “loosed” also means “opened,” so freedom appears as an opening in what seemed sealed.
THE MEANING
Even under captivity, the movement toward release is already present: what holds you closed can open. The pit does not have to end in death, and the bread that sustains life need not fail; confinement is not the whole future.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that captivity has already decided the ending, that the pit must mean death and that deprivation must follow.
THE ROOT
לְהִפָּתֵחַ
lehippateach
GROWS FROM
פתח
to open, make an opening
The word rendered “loosed” is phrased as “to be opened”: captivity is a closed condition, and life appears as a passage opening within it. The doorway and the key grow from this same root, gathering release, access, and movement into one seed.
ALSO GROWS
petaḥ: opening; doorway
פֶּתַח
A doorway opens a boundary, making movement possible where the way had seemed closed.
maphteaḥ: key
מַפְתֵּחַ
The key is named for its opening function, linking release with restored access.
THE PATTERN
Confinement gives way to life when what is closed opens and the way forward becomes accessible.
Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?I called upon the LORD in distress: the LORD answered me, and set me in a large place. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,THE THREAD
Thus saith the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him; and I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut; The word behind “be loosed” in Isaiah 51:14 is פתח (pataḥ, “to open”), the same root rendered “open” here. The echo makes release an opening of the barred way: what seemed closed becomes traversable.
