What Does Isaiah 54:2 Mean in the King James?
Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations: spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes;

THE KEY
The tent widens at the same time its anchors grow firmer, so making room does not mean losing stability.
THE MEANING
Your present dwelling does not define the full space available to you. The verse speaks as a present widening: curtains extend, cords reach farther, and stakes become firm enough to hold the expanded shelter. Room and support grow together.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that a narrow present sets a permanent limit, or that making more room must mean losing stability; the verse pairs wider reach with stronger stakes.
THE ROOT
הַרְחִיבִי
harḥîvî
GROWS FROM
רחב
r-ḥ-b
To be wide; to make spacious.
“Enlarge” in this verse is harḥîvî. This command shares its root with words for open, broad places: enlargement is a movement into spaciousness itself. The verse makes that widening tangible as the curtains spread and the tent’s boundaries extend.
ALSO GROWS
merḥav: Open space; a broad place.
מֶרְחָב
It names the spaciousness the tent is being widened to create.
reḥov: Broad place; street.
רְחֹב
The same root makes room an actual expanse, not just an abstract idea.
הַאֲרִיכִי
haʾarikhî
GROWS FROM
ארך
ʾ-r-kh
To be long; to lengthen.
“Lengthen” in this verse is haʾarikhî. This root carries length as both measure and duration. Here, longer cords give the widening tent greater reach, making length part of how its new space is held.
ALSO GROWS
ʾorekh: Length; measure from end to end.
אֹרֶךְ
It shows that the tent’s enlargement takes shape through a real increase in reach.
ʾerekh ʾappayim: Slow to flare; literally, long of nostrils.
אֶרֶךְ אַפַּיִם
The same root can describe extended duration, while here it describes extended space.
חַזֵּקִי
ḥazzēqî
GROWS FROM
חזק
ḥ-z-q
To be strong; to make firm or hold fast.
“Strengthen” in this verse is ḥazzēqî. This root carries both strength and holding fast. The stakes make the expansion sustainable: as the tent’s boundary widens, its anchoring grows firm with it.
ALSO GROWS
ḥāzāq: Strong; firm.
חָזָק
It reveals the firmness required to support the expanded tent.
heḥĕzîq: To hold fast; grasp; strengthen.
הֶחֱזִיק
It links strength with the act of holding something securely in place.
THE PATTERN
The movement into greater life joins wider space with the capacity to hold what enters it.
And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.I called upon the LORD in distress: the LORD answered me, and set me in a large place.O ye Corinthians, our mouth is open unto you, our heart is enlarged.THE THREAD
I called upon the LORD in distress: the LORD answered me, and set me in a large place.Isaiah’s “enlarge” and the psalm’s “large place” share רחב (rāḥab, to widen or be spacious). The psalm shows this spaciousness opening from distress, so the tent’s widened boundaries echo a passage from constriction into room.
