What Does Isaiah 57:9 Mean in the King James?
And thou wentest to the king with ointment, and didst increase thy perfumes, and didst send thy messengers far off, and didst debase thyself even unto hell.
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The verse pairs the farthest outward reach with the deepest downward self-lowering, to Sheol (שְׁאוֹל, sheol, the realm of the dead).
THE MEANING
When you seek the king’s favor, oil and perfumes multiply, messengers travel far, and you lower yourself to Sheol (שְׁאוֹל, sheol, the realm of the dead). The effort to secure favor can become a descent of the self toward death’s depth.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that surrendering yourself to power’s favor will lift you; the verse traces that bargain downward instead.
THE ROOT
וַתַּשְׁפִּילִי
vat-tashpili
GROWS FROM
שׁפל
sh-p-l
Be low; bring low.
“debase thyself” in this verse is vat-tashpili. This verb names the act of making yourself low, not simply feeling low. The same root describes human loftiness being brought down in Isaiah 2:11; here the self-lowering reaches the realm of the dead.
ALSO GROWS
shaphal: Low, lowly.
שָׁפָל
The root makes lowliness a position as well as an inner condition, clarifying the downward movement in the verse.
yishpal: Shall be humbled or brought down.
יִשְׁפָּל
Isaiah 2:11 uses this form for human loftiness: the same root that names your self-lowering can describe pride being brought low.
וַתְּשַׁלְּחִי
vat-teshalchi
GROWS FROM
שלח
sh-l-ḥ
Send forth, release, let go.
“send thy messengers” in this verse is vat-teshalchi. The messengers are sent far from you, and the root also carries the sense of letting go. The verse sets this outward release alongside the self being lowered, so increased reach does not mean the self is raised.
ALSO GROWS
shilleḥah: Send away or release.
שִׁלְּחָהּ
This form shows the root’s range from dispatching someone to letting someone go; here the messengers are sent beyond the near.
Shiloah: A name associated with waters of Shiloah.
שִׁלֹחַ
The same root appears in the name of the waters in Isaiah 8:6, linking sending with something that flows outward.
רִקֻּחָיִךְ
riqquḥayikh
GROWS FROM
רקח
r-q-ḥ
Mix or compound spices and perfumes.
These perfumes are compounded mixtures, not a single scent. Their multiplication makes the outward presentation increasingly elaborate even as the self moves downward.
ALSO GROWS
roqeah: One who prepares aromatic mixtures.
רֹקֵחַ
The word names the work behind the perfumes: deliberate compounding and preparation.
mirqaḥat: A prepared mixture of spices or ointment.
מִרְקַחַת
The branch shows that the perfumes are blended substances, giving “increase thy perfumes” the sense of multiplying carefully made mixtures.
THE PATTERN
Seeking favor or elevation through human power cannot secure the self from being brought low.
Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion. The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.THE THREAD
The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.The word translated “debase” in Isaiah 57:9 and “humbled” here share the root שׁפל (sh-p-l), “be low, bring low.” Isaiah 57:9 shows the self lowering itself to gain favor; this verse shows human loftiness brought down, while the LORD alone is exalted.
