What Does Isaiah 60:5 Mean in the King James?
Then thou shalt see, and flow together, and thine heart shall fear, and be enlarged; because the abundance of the sea shall be converted unto thee, the forces of the Gentiles shall come unto thee.

THE KEY
The Hebrew holds trembling and enlargement together: what overwhelms the heart can also widen it to receive.
THE MEANING
You see a vast current turn toward you: the sea’s abundance and the strength of peoples arrive within reach. Your heart trembles at the scale of it and grows broader at the same time. The surge does not only overwhelm; it opens room within you.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that trembling means you are too small to receive what is coming: here, fear and inner expansion happen together.
THE ROOT
וְרָחַב
verachav
GROWS FROM
רחב
To become wide or spacious.
English “enlarged” can sound like a rise in size alone; this root carries the sense of widening into roominess. Its branches name open space, so the heart’s expansion is capacity for the abundance arriving.
ALSO GROWS
rechov: A broad or open place, such as a public square.
רְחֹב
The heart’s enlargement shares its root with a space made open enough to hold more.
rechavah: Breadth or roominess.
רְחָבָה
This branch makes the image concrete: the heart gains room as the sea’s abundance turns toward it.
וְנָהַרְתְּ
venahart
GROWS FROM
נהר
To flow or stream; also to shine or radiate.
The word rendered “flow together” also carries the sense “shine” or “be radiant.” Its river branch names a moving current, letting gathering and radiance overlap in the verse: what arrives is pictured as a current that brightens the scene.
ALSO GROWS
nahar: A river or stream.
נָהָר
The river branch reveals the movement inside “flow together”: abundance comes as a current.
nehora: Light or radiance.
נְהוֹרָה
The related radiance sense lets the gathered movement also carry the image of shining.
יֵהָפֵךְ
yehafech
GROWS FROM
הפך
To turn, overturn, or change direction.
Here “converted” carries the sense of being turned or redirected. The sea’s multitude changes direction toward you, so abundance is an incoming current rather than something distant to behold.
ALSO GROWS
haphakh: To turn or overturn.
הָפַךְ
This basic verb makes the direction change in the verse visible.
mahpekah: An overturning or overthrow.
מַהְפֵּכָה
The same root can describe a thorough turning; here the sea’s abundance is turned toward you.
THE PATTERN
Where room widens, what was crowded gains space to enter, move, or gather.
Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations: spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes;I will run the way of thy commandments, when thou shalt enlarge my heart.O ye Corinthians, our mouth is open unto you, our heart is enlarged.THE THREAD
I will run the way of thy commandments, when thou shalt enlarge my heart. Both verses use the root רחב (rachav, to widen or make spacious) for the heart’s enlargement. Isaiah’s incoming multitude and the psalmist’s running way meet in a heart made roomy enough for movement.
