What Does Isaiah 64:2 Mean in the King James?
As when the melting fire burneth, the fire causeth the waters to boil, to make thy name known to thine adversaries, that the nations may tremble at thy presence!

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The fire makes God’s nature visible even to those who constrict, and the nations tremble before that unveiled presence.
THE MEANING
The image is heat strong enough to make waters boil: what is held in place becomes agitated and exposed. God’s name is God’s nature made known even to adversaries, and nations tremble before God’s face. The reader is inside this image now: divine presence is knowable even where resistance remains, and its arrival unsettles what seemed settled.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that opposition can keep God’s nature concealed: even adversaries come to know what the name holds.
THE ROOT
לְצָרֶיךָ
letsareikha
GROWS FROM
צרר
ts-r-r
To bind, press in, constrict; the root family also carries hostility.
The Hebrew word for God’s adversaries carries the pressure of constriction. The verse places God’s revealed nature before those who press in, while the nations themselves tremble.
ALSO GROWS
tsar: Narrow; also an adversary or foe.
צַר
English separates narrowness from enmity, while the Hebrew links the foe with the experience of being pressed in.
tsarah: Distress, trouble, affliction.
צָרָה
Distress is pictured as constriction, sharpening the force of the adversaries’ name in this verse.
לְהוֹדִיעַ
lehôdîaʿ
GROWS FROM
ידע
y-d-ʿ
To know, recognize, or become aware.
“make known” in this verse is lehôdîaʿ. The verb is a causative form of yada: to cause someone to know. God’s shem (שֵׁם, shem), name, carrying the nature of the one named, is made recognizable even to adversaries; the fire brings the character behind the name into view.
ALSO GROWS
yada: To know or recognize.
יָדַע
The causative verb in the verse leads toward actual knowing, not merely hearing a declaration.
da'at: Knowledge, understanding.
דַּעַת
This branch shows the movement from disclosure to recognition of what the name holds.
מִפָּנֶיךָ
mippanekha
GROWS FROM
פנה
p-n-h
To turn or face toward.
The KJV’s “presence” is literally “before your face.” The nations tremble before a face made manifest, giving the revelation a direct, encounter-shaped force.
ALSO GROWS
panim: Face; presence.
פָּנִים
The verse’s presence is the face of God before whom the nations tremble.
lifnei: Before, in front of.
לִפְנֵי
This common form preserves the image of being situated before a face.
THE PATTERN
When divine nature becomes manifest, even resistant people and the created world are shaken by its presence.
And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly. The LORD reigneth; let the people tremble: he sitteth between the cherubims; let the earth be moved.Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.THE THREAD
And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest. The word translated “presence” is panim, literally “face,” the same face-language as Isaiah’s “at thy presence.” Isaiah shows that face making nations quake; Exodus shows the same presence accompanying and giving rest, holding awe and nearness together.
