What Does Isaiah 66:8 Mean in the King James?
Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? or shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children.

THE KEY
The same Hebrew root asks whether a nation can be born at once and answers: Zion brought hers forth.
THE MEANING
The question voices what can seem impossible: that a whole people could come into being in a day. The verse answers with Zion in labor, giving birth to her children. It holds travail and sudden arrival together, so new life need not be visible long before it appears.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the certainty that a beginning this large must take a long, visible time to become real.
THE ROOT
יִוָּלֵד
yivvaled
GROWS FROM
ילד
to bear, beget, bring forth
“born / brought forth” in this verse is yivvaled. The question’s “be born” and the answer’s “brought forth” are forms of the same root. English makes one passive and one active; Hebrew lets one seed hold both sides of the birth, so the answer already contains the possibility that seemed impossible.
ALSO GROWS
yalad: to bear, beget, bring forth
יָלַד
It is the root verb repeated in the question about a nation’s birth and the answer about Zion.
yeled: child; one born
יֶלֶד
It links the act of bringing forth to the person who comes forth.
toledot: generations; what comes from a lineage
תּוֹלְדוֹת
It extends the root’s movement from one birth to the generations that follow.
THE PATTERN
What seems impossible to bring forth can arrive in astonishing fullness, with travail and birth belonging to the same movement.
For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.A little one shall become a thousand, and a small one a strong nation: I the LORD will hasten it in his time.A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.THE THREAD
Sing, O barren, thou that didst not bear; break forth into singing, and cry aloud, thou that didst not travail with child: for more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife, saith the LORD.The Hebrew word translated “bear” shares the ילד root with “born” and “brought forth” in Isaiah 66:8. The barren one and Zion in labor are joined by the same birth-root: what has not yet appeared is not the limit of what can come forth.
