This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The “speckled bird” is a marked bird of prey: what is named as inheritance is already pictured as a target.

What you hold as inheritance is exposed as conspicuous prey: the birds circle against it, and the beasts of the field gather to consume it. The verse keeps the threat physical and immediate; the danger moves from surrounding to devouring.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that what is called God’s own must therefore be beyond attack.

עַיִט

ayit

GROWS FROM

עיט

To swoop upon prey; the noun names a bird of prey.

The descriptor ⁨צָבוּעַ⁩ (tsavua, colored or painted) makes the bird conspicuous; ⁨עַיִט⁩ (ayit, bird of prey) belongs to a root also used for swooping on spoil. The image joins visibility to predation: the inheritance is not simply surrounded, but seen as a target for attack.

ALSO GROWS

ayit: Bird of prey.

עַיִט

In Genesis 15:11, birds of prey descend on the carcasses; the same word brings the threat of predation into this verse’s image.

vatta'at: You swooped upon.

וַתַּעַט

In 1 Samuel 15:19, Saul is said to have “fly[ied] upon the spoil”; this verb from the same root makes the attack in the bird image active.

נַחֲלָתִי

nahalati

GROWS FROM

נחל

Inherit or allot as a possession.

“heritage” in this verse is nahalati. The inheritance word names what is allotted and received; it does not by itself promise invulnerability. Here the speaker’s own allotted possession stands beside circling birds and summoned beasts, so belonging and exposure occupy the same sentence.

ALSO GROWS

nahalah: Inheritance, allotted possession.

נַחֲלָה

Deuteronomy 32:9 uses this word for the LORD’s portion, showing how the term names what is held as an inheritance.

lehanḥil: To cause someone to inherit.

לְהַנְחִיל

Proverbs 8:21 uses this form for causing others to inherit; the root holds both the inheritance and the act of assigning it.

לְאָכְלָה

le’okhlah

GROWS FROM

אכל

Eat, consume.

“devour” in this verse is le’okhlah. The threat culminates in the language of eating: the inheritance is no longer merely opposed but treated as food. This root holds ordinary eating and destructive consumption, moving the verse from circling to making its target edible.

ALSO GROWS

akhal: To eat or consume.

אָכַל

This is the root’s basic action, carried into the verse’s final threat.

ma’akhal: Food, something to eat.

מַאֲכָל

This noun from the same root turns eating into its object; here the inheritance is threatened as food for the beasts.

What is precious can be exposed to predation, with threats circling before they move toward consumption.

I have forsaken mine house, I have left mine heritage; I have given the dearly beloved of my soul into the hand of her enemies.
Jeremiah 12:7 · KJVThe speaker’s heritage is placed in enemies’ hands, setting the exposure that verse 9 renders as a predator image.
For they have devoured Jacob, and laid waste his dwelling place.
Psalm 79:7 · KJVThe threat reaches its endpoint: what is precious is consumed and its dwelling laid waste.
I have forsaken mine house, I have left mine heritage; I have given the dearly beloved of my soul into the hand of her enemies.
Jeremiah 12:7 · KJV

Jeremiah 12:7 repeats ⁨נַחֲלָתִי⁩ (nahalati, my inheritance) and places it in enemies’ hands; verse 9 turns that exposure into the image of a marked bird surrounded by predators. The shared root ⁨נחל⁩ (nachal, inherit or allot as possession) ties the violence directly to what is called the speaker’s own.
