This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

Jeremiah’s “Amen” voices a desire for the word to be made to stand, while the vessels and exiles are still named as things that must return.

You can voice a real longing for what has been taken to come home. Saying “Amen” gives that longing its full weight, yet the verse leaves fulfillment with the LORD: the spoken words must stand and the carried-away must return. Hope here is candid, but it is not treated as already accomplished.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Sincerely agreeing with a promise you want does not, by itself, prove that the LORD spoke it.

אָמֵן

ʾāmēn

GROWS FROM

אמן

ʾ-m-n

To be firm or steady; to support and establish.

“Amen” carries the sense of firmness beneath its familiar use as assent. Jeremiah voices the hope plainly, but asks the LORD to make the words stand; his assent is not itself their fulfillment.

ALSO GROWS

ʾāman: To be firm, support, or confirm.

אָמַן

The verb gives “Amen” its sense of something held steady or made reliable.

ʾĕmūnāh: Trust; steadiness, something to lean your full weight on.

אֱמוּנָה

This branch connects assent with reliance: what is firm can bear trust.

ʾāmēn: Truly; so be it.

אָמֵן

The spoken affirmation echoes the root’s firmness, while the verse still asks the LORD to bring the hoped-for words into effect.

יָקֵם

yāqēm

GROWS FROM

קום

q-w-m

To rise, stand, or be established; in a causative form, to make stand or establish.

The Hebrew behind “perform thy words” pictures making the words stand. Jeremiah’s request is not only that the prophecy be spoken or affirmed, but that it become established in what happens.

ALSO GROWS

qūm: Rise; stand.

קוּם

The root’s basic movement gives “perform” the image of words standing in reality.

hēqīm: Raise up; establish.

הֵקִים

This causative form makes the link explicit: to establish is to cause something to stand.

הָשִׁיב

hāšīv

GROWS FROM

שוב

sh-w-b

To turn back or return.

“Bring again” comes from the root of returning. The verse holds the vessels and the exiles in one movement: what was carried away is to turn back to its place.

ALSO GROWS

šūv: Turn back; return.

שׁוּב

This is the root motion named in the verse’s hoped-for return from Babylon.

təšūvāh: Return; turning back.

תְּשׁוּבָה

This related word preserves the same movement of turning back, illuminating restoration as return rather than something added.

A spoken claim is established as true when it stands in what comes to pass.

When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.
Deuteronomy 18:22 · KJVThe claim is measured by whether the thing it names comes to pass.
The prophet which prophesieth of peace, when the word of the prophet shall come to pass, then shall the prophet be known, that the LORD hath truly sent him.
Jeremiah 28:9 · KJVThe hoped-for word of peace becomes established through its fulfillment.
And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
Luke 1:20 · KJVThe words are shown to stand when they are fulfilled in their season.
And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;
Revelation 3:14 · KJV

The Greek ⁨ἀμήν⁩ (amēn), “truly” or “so be it,” carries the same word as Hebrew ⁨אָמֵן⁩ (ʾāmēn), “firm” or “so be it.” Jeremiah voices “Amen” toward words he hopes will stand; Revelation calls the faithful and true witness “the Amen,” naming firmness itself.
