King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The same Hebrew verb holds both halves of the promise: you are for God, and God will be for you.
THE MEANING
Your belonging to God and God’s being with you are held together here: you are God’s people, and God is your God. The verse describes a living relationship, with both sides joined by the same verb of being.
THE ROOT
אֶהְיֶה
ehyeh
GROWS FROM
היה
hayah
To be, become, or come to pass.
The promise uses this same root for both sides: “you shall be” and “I will be.” Hebrew binds your belonging and God’s presence together through one verb of being.
ALSO GROWS
vayehi: And it came to be.
וַיְהִי
This common form shows the root describing something coming into being, not merely carrying a label.
yihyeh: He or it will be.
יִהְיֶה
This future form shares the root’s sense of being with the promise that God will be for you.
THE PATTERN
Covenant is expressed as shared belonging: God is with the people, and the people are God’s.
And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people. And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.THE THREAD
And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.Jeremiah’s “I will be” and God’s “I AM” here come from the same Hebrew verb, היה (hayah, “to be or become”). The promise reads as the living expression of that name: the one who says “I AM” will be God for you.
