THE KEY
The ground-being is gone, and even the birds have fled: desolation is creation emptying of life.
THE MEANING
You are looking at a world emptied of human presence, with even the birds of the heavens gone. The desolation reaches through the whole landscape: life has withdrawn from the ground and the sky alike.
THE ROOT
הָאָדָם
ha’adam
GROWS FROM
אדם
Human; Genesis ties אָדָם (adam, human) to אֲדָמָה (adamah, ground).
“man” in this verse is ha’adam. The Hebrew names the human in the same word-family as the ground. Here, the absence of ha’adam makes the scene feel like creation losing the ground-being it once formed.
ALSO GROWS
adamah: ground, soil
אֲדָמָה
Genesis 2:7 forms the human from the ground; Jeremiah’s missing human is the ground-being removed from the scene.
adam: human
אָדָם
The word names humanity as part of the created landscape, so its absence signals more than an empty place.
עוֹף
ʿoph
GROWS FROM
עוף
Fly, move through the air.
English names the creature; Hebrew keeps its flight inside the word for bird. When the birds flee, the heavens lose their living motion as well as their creatures.
ALSO GROWS
ʿoph: bird, flying creature
עוֹף
The birds are named by the motion that defines them; their departure makes the sky itself feel emptied.
ʿuph: to fly
עוּף
This verb shares the flight-root, keeping creature and motion connected in the verse’s image.
THE PATTERN
When the ground-being is removed, desolation reaches beyond humanity into the whole living creation.
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.I will consume man and beast; I will consume the fowls of the heaven, and the fishes of the sea, and the stumblingblocks with the wicked; and I will cut off man from off the land, saith the LORD.For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.THE THREAD
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.Jeremiah calls the absent human הָאָדָם (ha’adam, the human), a word Genesis 2:7 places beside אֲדָמָה (adamah, the ground). Read together, the scene turns creation backward: the ground-being is gone, and the flying life departs too.
