What Does Jeremiah 4:5 Mean in the King James?
Declare ye in Judah, and publish in Jerusalem; and say, Blow ye the trumpet in the land: cry, gather together, and say, Assemble yourselves, and let us go into the defenced cities.
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The trumpet does more than announce danger: its cry summons scattered people into a gathered movement toward refuge.
THE MEANING
You hear danger named openly, and the cry gathers people to move together toward fortified shelter. Jerusalem carries the name’s horizon of wholeness, while the verse faces the threat without pretending it has passed.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie this undoes is that danger must be faced alone. The repeated summons makes refuge a shared movement.
THE ROOT
קִרְאוּ
qir’u from qara
GROWS FROM
קרא
qara: to call out, summon, proclaim.
The Hebrew word translated “cry” can also mean to call or summon. Here the trumpet’s alarm becomes a call that draws people into assembly and toward refuge.
ALSO GROWS
miqra: a convocation or assembly; also a reading or proclamation
מִקְרָא
This branch shows that a call can gather people into a shared assembly.
qeri’ah: a calling or reading aloud
קְרִיאָה
The alarm is not only sound; it is a spoken summons that makes a response possible.
הֵאָסְפוּ
he’asefu
GROWS FROM
אסף
asaph: to gather in, collect, bring together.
“Assemble yourselves” in this verse is he’asefu. The word carries the sense of gathering people in, not merely forming a group. The verse moves from that gathering to a shared journey toward fortified shelter.
ALSO GROWS
asifah: an assembly or collection
אֲסִיפָה
The branch makes visible the gathering already contained in the command.
asif: ingathering or harvest
אָסִיף
The same root can describe what is brought in together, echoing the people drawn toward shelter.
יְרוּשָׁלַיִם
Yerushalayim
GROWS FROM
שלם
shalem: to be whole, complete.
“Jerusalem” in this verse is Yerushalayim. Yerushalayim carries the שׁלם (sh-l-m, whole or complete) family of שָׁלוֹם (shalom, wholeness) in its name. That horizon stands beside a live warning here: the threat remains real, and the summons points people toward refuge.
ALSO GROWS
shalom: wholeness, completeness
שָׁלוֹם
This branch carries the wholeness held in Jerusalem’s name.
shalem: whole, complete
שָׁלֵם
This branch names the quality of being intact, set beside the verse’s urgent search for shelter.
THE PATTERN
A warning becomes actionable when its signal gathers people and moves them toward shelter.
Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand;Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast. Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:THE THREAD
Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly:Jeremiah’s “cry” and Joel’s “call” share קרא (qara, “call or summon”). In both verses, the trumpet’s alarm becomes a spoken call that gathers people for a response.
