THE KEY
The horror is not only that the dead are eaten; it is that no living hand remains to frighten the scavengers away.
THE MEANING
This verse leaves you with an unsoftened image: the dead are exposed as food for birds and beasts, and no one drives them off. Even the small human act of scattering the scavengers is absent.
THE ROOT
מַחֲרִיד
maḥărîd
GROWS FROM
חרד
ḥ-r-d
To tremble, quake, or be afraid; in causative forms, to make someone tremble or frighten them away.
“fray them away” in this verse is maḥărîd. The Hebrew names the act by its effect: making the scavengers tremble. Their feeding goes uninterrupted because no one is there to make them scatter; the verse describes complete exposure, not merely an unburied death.
ALSO GROWS
ḥārad: To tremble or be afraid.
חָרַד
This is the root action behind the image of frightening the scavengers away.
ḥărādāh: Trembling, alarm, or terror.
חֲרָדָה
This names the fear the missing protector would have caused.
maḥărîd: One who causes trembling; one who frightens away.
מַחֲרִיד
This is the form used for the absent person who would make the birds and beasts scatter.
THE PATTERN
When protection collapses under judgment, the human body is exposed to the creatures ordinarily kept at a distance.
And thy carcase shall be meat unto all fowls of the air, and unto the beasts of the earth, and no man shall fray them away. The dead bodies of thy servants have they given to be meat unto the fowls of the heaven, the flesh of thy saints unto the beasts of the earth. And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;THE THREAD
And thy carcase shall be meat unto all fowls of the air, and unto the beasts of the earth, and no man shall fray them away.Jeremiah and Deuteronomy use the same Hebrew verb for frightening the scavengers away. The repeated phrase sharpens the scene: the bodies lie exposed, and nobody remains to make the birds or beasts scatter.
