King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The adversary enters the LORD’s gathering, revealing that opposition can be present within divine sight.
THE MEANING
Opposition can stand within the same field of presence that holds you; its arrival does not make the LORD absent. The verse keeps the gathering and the challenge within it in view at once.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The presence of opposition means the LORD has left the scene.
THE ROOT
הַשָּׂטָן
ha-satan
GROWS FROM
שׂטן
To oppose or act as an adversary.
“Satan” in this verse is ha-satan. The Hebrew calls him “the adversary,” naming the force he embodies as well as the figure in the scene. Opposition enters the assembly before the LORD, rather than appearing outside the field of divine presence.
ALSO GROWS
satan: Adversary, opponent
שָׂטָן
This noun names the adversarial presence that comes among the gathered beings.
sitnah: Hostility, accusation
שִׂטְנָה
This related form shows the same root reaching into hostile accusation, making opposition an active role as well as a presence.
THE PATTERN
The heavenly court holds opposition within view as the LORD presides over the gathering.
And he said, Hear thou therefore the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing by him on his right hand and on his left. And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him.And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.THE THREAD
And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him.The same Hebrew root names the adversary in both verses. Zechariah makes the role’s force visible: the adversary stands to resist, clarifying what Job’s figure brings into the gathering.
