This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The Hebrew word for “fashioned” shares its root with words for sorrow, so Job’s shaping and pain are already joined in the word.

The verse lets you speak from inside a brutal contradiction: the hands that make and shape you all around are also destroying you. Being made does not cancel the reality of destruction, and the line does not explain that destruction away.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that being made by God means you must pretend God is not destroying you.

עִצְּבוּנִי

ʿiṣṣəvûnî

GROWS FROM

עצב

To shape or form; the root also carries senses of hurting, grieving, and causing pain.

The word rendered “fashioned” carries the root ⁨ע-צ-ב⁩, which also appears in Hebrew words for pain and sorrow. English separates the maker’s shaping from the speaker’s suffering; the Hebrew consonants keep them close.

ALSO GROWS

ʿiṣṣāvōn: Pain, sorrow, toil

עִצָּבוֹן

Genesis 3:16 uses this word for sorrow bound to bringing forth life, echoing the root in Job’s “fashioned.”

ʿăṣāḇîm: Sorrows, painful labors

עֲצָבִים

Psalm 127:2 calls laboring effort “the bread of sorrows,” showing the ache carried by this root.

וּתְבַלְּעֵנִי

ūṯəvalləʿēnî

GROWS FROM

בלע

To swallow, engulf, or devour.

The verb rendered “destroy” pictures being swallowed up, not merely damaged. Beside the first verb, it turns Job’s complaint into a movement from being shaped all around to being engulfed.

ALSO GROWS

bālaʿ: Swallow down, devour

בָּלַע

Job 20:15 uses this root for riches being swallowed down, giving “destroy” the force of being consumed.

tivlaʿēmo: Swallowed them

תִּבְלָעֵמוֹ

In Exodus 15:12 the earth swallows them; the image makes destruction an engulfing that takes the victims from sight.

Scripture holds God’s power to form creatures together with God’s power over their life, death, and fate.

And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.
Genesis 6:7 · KJVThe verse names destruction and creation together, echoing Job’s painful pairing of being made and being destroyed.
See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand.
Deuteronomy 32:39 · KJVKilling sits beside making alive, and wounding beside healing, within a claim about God’s hand.
Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?
Romans 9:21 · KJVThe potter and clay image presents forming as an authority that reaches beyond the act of shaping.
Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
Genesis 3:16 · KJV

Job’s word “fashioned” shares the Hebrew root ⁨ע-צ-ב⁩ (ʿ-ṣ-b, shaping or forming) with the word translated “sorrow” here. Genesis uses that root for the pain of bringing forth life, deepening Job’s protest without resolving it.
