What Does Job 11:9 Mean in the King James?
The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.

THE KEY
The earth and sea become a ruler that proves too small to measure the wisdom before you.
THE MEANING
God’s wisdom exceeds every scale you can set: longer than the earth and wider than the sea. The limits of what you can measure do not define the limits of what is present to you.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that God’s wisdom fits inside what you can understand; your reach is not the measure of its reach.
THE ROOT
רָחֲבָה
raḥavah
GROWS FROM
ר־ח־ב
To be wide or spacious.
The word for “broader” carries the sense of spaciousness, not just a greater number on a scale. The verse presents wisdom as so expansive that even the sea cannot mark its boundary.
ALSO GROWS
raḥav: To be or become wide.
רָחַב
This verb shares the seed of “broader,” making the verse’s vastness an image of widening beyond limits.
merḥav: A broad place, open space.
מֶרְחָב
This noun shows that the same root can describe spaciousness as a place one enters, as well as a breadth that exceeds measurement.
THE PATTERN
God’s understanding exceeds every created measure and remains beyond human search.
Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!THE THREAD
He brought me forth also into a large place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me.“Large place” translates מֶרְחָב (merḥav), from the same root ר־ח־ב (r-ḥ-b) as Job’s “broader.” Here that root’s spaciousness becomes a place one is brought into, extending Job’s image of immeasurable breadth into an image of room to stand.
