What Does Job 23:1 Mean in the King James?
Then Job answered and said,
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
Before the verse tells you what Job says, it reveals that his words are an answer, speech taking shape inside an exchange.
THE MEANING
Your words do not arise in a vacuum: they meet something that has reached you. The verse holds response and expression together, giving what you carry a voice.
THE ROOT
וַיַּעַן
wayya'an
GROWS FROM
ענה
To answer or respond, to meet what has been said or asked.
The root gives Job’s speech a relational shape before the verse reveals its content: he is responding to something already spoken. The familiar phrase “answered and said” lets you hear both the response and the words that carry it.
ALSO GROWS
ma'aneh: An answer or response.
מַעֲנֶה
This noun uses the same root in Proverbs 15:1, where an answer can turn the direction of an exchange.
ya'aneh: He answers or responds.
יַעֲנֶה
The verb form keeps the root’s sense of answering active: speech meets a voice or question that came before it.
וַיֹּאמַר
wayyomar
GROWS FROM
אמר
To say, speak, or declare.
“said” in this verse is wayyomar. This second verb gives the response a spoken form. Together, the roots let you hear two linked movements: words meet what came before, then the answer takes shape as speech.
ALSO GROWS
imrah: An utterance or saying.
אִמְרָה
The same root gives speech a form that can be carried as a distinct saying.
ma'amar: A statement or saying.
מַאֲמָר
This branch keeps the connection between speaking and the words spoken.
THE PATTERN
Speech can answer what is present while making the heart’s contents audible.
And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.THE THREAD
A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.“Answer” here is מַעֲנֶה (ma’aneh), from the same ענה root as Job’s “answered.” The shared root shows an answer meeting another person’s words, and Proverbs makes visible how that response can redirect the exchange.
