What Does Job 28:19 Mean in the King James?
The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
Wisdom cannot be made equal to treasure, because discernment and gold belong to different scales of value.
THE MEANING
Wisdom stands beyond the highest treasures you can name: even topaz and pure gold cannot equal it. The value of discernment cannot be measured by the scale that prices possessions.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that enough wealth can purchase an equal substitute for wisdom.
THE ROOT
יִשְׁוֶה
yishveh
GROWS FROM
שוה
To be equal, like, or comparable.
The verb carries the sense of matching or standing equal in worth. The verse says that even pure gold cannot be made wisdom’s equivalent; it is not simply a more expensive item on the same scale.
ALSO GROWS
shaveh: Equal, equivalent.
שָׁוֶה
This form makes the verse’s measure explicit: the treasure cannot be wisdom’s equal.
hishvah: To make equal, compare, or equate.
הִשְׁוָה
This causative form echoes the act of comparison the verse denies: no comparison makes gold equal to wisdom.
חָכְמָה
chokhmah
GROWS FROM
חכם
To be wise or skillful.
Chokhmah can name both wisdom and skill. What no treasure equals is not merely information to possess, but discernment that lets you see and act skillfully.
ALSO GROWS
chakam: Wise, skillful.
חָכָם
The related form describes a person whose discernment is active, giving wisdom a practical dimension beyond possessions.
chokhmah: Wisdom, skill.
חָכְמָה
This is the quality the verse places beyond comparison with jewels and gold.
THE PATTERN
Wisdom’s worth exceeds every material measure; no treasure can equal what it reveals.
She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.THE THREAD
For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.Proverbs uses the same root שוה (shavah, to be equal or comparable) as Job 28:19, repeating the failure of comparison. Job names topaz and pure gold; Proverbs widens the comparison to everything desire can name.
