This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

Even Death knows wisdom only by report: it has heard of her, but does not claim to contain her.

The verse gives Destruction and Death a voice, and their testimony has a limit: they have heard wisdom’s report. Your knowing can reach the edge of what seems final and still stop short of wisdom’s source.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It dissolves the belief that the furthest reach of knowing is the same as knowing wisdom: even Death says it has heard only a report.

שִׁמְעָהּ

shimʿāh

GROWS FROM

שמע

To hear, listen, or receive news.

The word rendered “fame” carries the sense of a report, from the same ⁨שמע⁩ root as “heard” in the sentence. English makes the phrase sound like a reputation; the Hebrew echoes hearing with report, showing that even Death’s knowledge of wisdom arrives by what it has heard.

ALSO GROWS

shamaʿ: Hear or listen.

שָׁמַע

This is the verb behind “we have heard,” echoing the same root as the report they have received.

shemuʿah: Report, news, or something heard.

שְׁמוּעָה

This related form makes the shared seed visible: the “fame” is something carried by hearing.

אֲבַדּוֹן

Avaddon

GROWS FROM

אבד

To perish or be lost.

Destruction is named through the root of perishing and lostness. Even this embodiment of ruin speaks only as a hearer of wisdom’s report; its reach does not make it the source of what it knows.

ALSO GROWS

avad: Perish or be lost.

אָבַד

This verb reveals the seed inside “Destruction”: the state of being lost or perished.

Avaddon: Destruction or the place of ruin.

אֲבַדּוֹן

The name for Destruction grows from the same root, joining the speaker in this verse to the condition it embodies.

Wisdom is heard of at the limits of knowledge, yet remains beyond anything that can claim to contain it.

But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding?
Job 28:12 · KJVThe question asks where wisdom can be found, while Job 28:22 shows that even Death knows her only by report.
Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea further; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.
Ecclesiastes 8:17 · KJVEven sustained searching cannot turn the limits of human knowledge into possession of what remains beyond it.
O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!
Romans 11:33 · KJVWisdom’s depth exceeds the reach of searching, even where its riches and effects can be named.
I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee.
Job 42:5 · KJV

Both verses use the root ⁨שמע⁩ (shamaʿ, hear). Job 28:22 gives Death and Destruction wisdom’s report; Job 42:5 sets hearing about something beside seeing it, opening the difference between receiving a report and perceiving more directly.
