What Does Job 29:16 Mean in the King James?
I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
Care for someone in need means taking their case seriously enough to investigate what you do not yet know.
THE MEANING
Your need is not reduced to what others already understand about it. The verse presents care as taking your cause seriously while it is still unknown, searching until what is hidden can be seen.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Your need is not real unless you can immediately explain and prove it.
THE ROOT
רִיב
rîb
GROWS FROM
ריב
r-y-b
To contend, plead, or bring a case forward.
“cause” in this verse is rîb. The Hebrew רִיב names a dispute or case, not merely an abstract reason. Job joins advocacy to uncovering what has not yet become known.
ALSO GROWS
yārîb: To plead someone’s case or contend on their behalf.
יָרִיב
The same root describes advocacy: the needy person’s cause is something that can be taken up and argued.
merīvāh: A quarrel or contested matter.
מְרִיבָה
This branch shows the conflict contained in a case; Job does not look away from the dispute but searches it out.
חָקַר
ḥāqar
GROWS FROM
חקר
ḥ-q-r
To search thoroughly, probe, or investigate.
“searched out” in this verse is ḥāqar. חקר frames the action as probing through the unknown rather than reacting to a ready-made explanation. Job searches because he does not know; care is shown as a pursuit of the hidden case.
ALSO GROWS
ḥēqer: Investigation, probing, or what is reached by searching.
חֵקֶר
The noun keeps the emphasis on inquiry itself: the matter calls for depth, not a quick judgment.
wenaḥqorah: An invitation to investigate thoroughly.
וְנַחְקֹרָה
Lamentations uses this form for searching and examining one’s ways, showing how the root brings what is unclear into view.
THE PATTERN
Care for the vulnerable becomes justice when it searches out their case and answers their actual need.
Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.THE THREAD
Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.Psalm 44:21 uses the same root, חקר (ḥ-q-r), meaning to search thoroughly, for an inquiry reaching into what is hidden in the heart. Here, the unknown is a reason to investigate the case, not a reason to dismiss it.
