What Does Job 34:22 Mean in the King James?
There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.

THE KEY
Darkness can conceal wrongdoing from people, but it cannot make the hidden unseen to God.
THE MEANING
When wrongdoing disappears from human view, it does not disappear from God’s sight. Even what is covered by the deepest darkness remains seen; concealment changes who can see, not what is real.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that what no human sees is unseen altogether: concealment from people is not concealment from God.
THE ROOT
יִסָּתֵרוּ
yissateru
GROWS FROM
סתר
s-t-r
To hide, conceal, or be hidden.
“hide themselves” in this verse is yissateru. The Hebrew root keeps the focus on concealment itself: it names both a hidden place and the act of being hidden. The verse says neither can put crookedness beyond God’s sight.
ALSO GROWS
seter: Secret; hidden place.
סֵתֶר
The verse’s act of hiding belongs to the same word family as a secret place, and Job says even such a place cannot shield wrongdoing from sight.
mistar: Hiding place; place of concealment.
מִסְתָּר
This branch names the place as well as the act of hiding; the verse denies that darkness can make any such refuge invisible to God.
THE PATTERN
What is concealed from human eyes remains open to God’s sight, even in the deepest darkness.
He discovereth deep things out of darkness, and bringeth out to light the shadow of death.Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.THE THREAD
The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.The Hebrew for “secret things” is הַנִּסְתָּרֹת (hanistarot), meaning “hidden things,” from the same root סתר (s-t-r), meaning “to hide or conceal,” as “hide themselves” in Job. Deuteronomy says hidden things belong to the LORD; Job shows that even darkness cannot provide a hiding place beyond God’s sight.
